Activity 2

Book up summer: every summer, while students from affluent families make progress on their reading skills, students from low-income families lose ground. When this "summer learning loss" trend is multiplied throughout 12 years of school, students from low-income families can finish high school several years behind. Book up summer addresses this problem by reaching approximately 2,200 kindergarteners through second graders from high-poverty elementary schools, giving them 12 books each to read during summer vacation. Giving children their choice of books furnishes them with the resources and incentive necessary to read during the summer, avoiding the summer learning loss phenomenon, and ultimately helping to narrow the achievement gap.

Activity 3

Story times: approximately 42 story time volunteers reach nearly 1,225 children in need every year. Story times reach preschool and kindergarten age children with varying risk factors including: poverty, english language learners (ell), and below average reading scores. Trained volunteers visit the same classroom each month to share books, songs, finger plays, and crafts with the children. Each story time has a fun theme and an information sheet for parents on how to continue the learning at home. Volunteers provide "reading role models" for children, and help increase children's level of interest and excitement about reading.
