DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz AcademyThe SWHS Performing Arts boosters provided administrative and financial support during the 2016-2017 school year for student participation in several local and regional music festivals. In addition to the quarterly public concerts given at the school and seasonal Pep Band performances at school sporting events,, the 56 students in the Wind Ensemble traveled to Seattle to perform at the Winter Fest and to Vancouver, BC to participate in the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival.. The PAB also hosted professional trumpeter Harry Ong who participated in a class music clinic and joined them for a Veterans day concert. The 17 members of our Jazz band ensemble and the 12 members of our Jazz Academy participated in the Clark College Jazz Festival in Vancouver, WA and the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho. Five jazz students also participated in the Washington Music Education Associations solo and ensemble competition, placing well in the competition. Additionally the PAB provided for purchase and repair of several instruments, helped finance student music lessons and provided scholarship to two graduating seniors. The PAB depended upon the efforts of several dozen parent and local volunteers and donors in order to accomplish this years work.Show ChoirSouth Whidbey High School Show Choir "Music In Motion" performed nine times during the year not including lunch time performances. There was approximately 30 students enrolled in choir and all but 2 were able to attend festival competition in the spring. One of the students who could not attend was having surgery and the other had academic reasons. This was the first time these students have had an opportunity to compete on any level and was a great experience. They performed 2 times at assemblies and graduation, once at Maple Ridge for a holiday concert, 4 public concerts and festival competition. This was more than they have in the past and was challenging to keep up with. It took several small and 3 major fundraisers to help assist students in paying for festival. A core of 5 or so parents helped at varying times to help with fundraisers and 5 chaperones accompanied instructor Paula Ludtke to Festival in Auburn followed by a Heritage dinner on Blake Island.18 members of the Jazz Band participated in the Clark College Jazz Festival in Vancouver WA and the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow ID. The Jazz Band also received the honor of being invited to participate in the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival in Monterey CA and was able to do so through local funding efforts. The 30 plus members of the student choir gave a dozen various performances at school events, public concerts and community venues. Additionally, the PAB also supported the hosting of two jazz student clinics and a public concert given by guest musicians, provided for the purchase of and repairs to several instruments, helped finance student music lessons and provided two college scholarships to graduating seniors. The PAB accomplished the program support with the help of several dozen parents, local volunteers and donors.$50,098-
