Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Writers in the Schools - Since 1994, SAL's Writers in the Schools (WITS) program has helped more than 100,000 K-12 public school students in the Puget Sound region discover their authentic writing and performance voices through the skill-building arts education that WITS provides. In the 2013/14 program year, WITS directly served 5,950 K-12 public school students and school-aged hospital patients, 127 K-12 teachers, and employed 23 of Seattles best poets, novelists, spoken word artists, comic book artists, and memoirists as teachers-in-residence. Programming spanned 23 schools across four school districts, as well as Seattle Childrens Hospital. Extensive and comprehensive evaluation methods revealed excellent results in four outcome areas: improvement in quality of student writing; increase in students interest in and appreciation of writing; increase in students self-confidence; increase in teachers skills and self-confidence. Additionally, students showed substantial improvement in their revision skills (80% increase overall) and expressed an increased ability to think clearly and to tell others what they think. WITS further fulfills the mission of bringing systemic improvement to teaching reading and writing by providing teachers with effective professional resources. More than three-fourths of last years teachers surveyed said they have already adopted some of the writers lessons or plan to. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: TEDx - SAL serves as fiscal sponsor for this program. TEDx Rainier is an independently organized TED event, a gathering of thinkers, entrepreneurs, academics, artists, environmentalists and engaged citizens working to design better futures that is organized as an annual event each fall in Seattle.
