Graywolf press, founded in 1974, publishes high-quality poetry, fiction, and literary nonfiction that is not well served by mainstream publishers, and brings that work to the widest possible audience. Our annual operating budget of $2.3 million ranks graywolf as one of the country's largest literary nonprofit presses. The continued absorption of independent literary presses by commercial conglomerates threatens the literary landscape: currently five media conglomerates publish 80 percent of u.s. Books. Graywolf's role, as a robust nonprofit literary publisher, is to counter that trend and give prominence to literature, recognize and nurture the writers who produce it, and connect new authors to audiences hungry for unique literary voices. Cost of sales - cost of sales includes services directly related to the production and selling of books, including actual manufacturing costs, royalties due to authors, contract fees charged to graywolf for distribution services and the cost of the estimated increase in unsaleable inventory.graywolf press had a year of success in 2012 with tremendous sales of both thirty new frontlist titles and older backlist titles. The new york times book review and new york times printed thirteen reviews of graywolf's 2012 list, including a glowing front-page review for kevin barry's "city of bohane," and four graywolf titles were included in the new york times book review's list of "100 notable books" for the year. In 2012, tracy k. Smith's "life on mars" won the pulitzer prize, and catherine barnett's "the game of boxes" became the sixth graywolf title to win the james laughlin award. A backlist title, "notes from no man's land" by eula biss, was selected for the common read program at the university of kansas, where it was read and discussed by 5,000 incoming freshman students. Graywolf books reached an estimated audience of 280,000 people in 2012, and graywolf authors read at approximately 300 events across the country, reaching at least 9,100 readers.
