Vaccines and immunization:vaccines offer reliable, low-cost protection against life-threatening disease, making them one of the most effective health interventions of all time. In low-resource countries, where health services are often too remote or expensive to save children's lives once they are sick, vaccines may be their best chance for survival.path is working to improve access to vaccines in low-resource countries around the world. Our projects increase availability, accelerate research and development, and strengthen supply chain systems. Through this work, we are making progress against potentially deadly health threats such as cervical cancer, diarrheal disease, japanese encephalitis, malaria, meningitis, pandemic influenza, and pneumococcal disease. In 2012, we used innovative approaches to bring vaccines to more communities, advanced new vaccine candidates, strengthened vaccine supply chains and systems, and successfully advocated to protect vaccines for millions of children.for example, path supported 13 asian countries to safely and effectively adopt a vaccine against japanese encephalitis, the leading cause of disability in asia.in africa, the lifesaving menafrivac vaccine, developed through a partnership between path and the world health organization (who) in collaboration with serum institute of india ltd., continued to save lives. This year, 48 million people were vaccinated, part of the 100 million people across 10 african countries who have received the vaccination since its introduction. The vaccine also became the first in africa approved for transport and storage outside the traditional cold chain, helping health workers reach people in remote areas.together with partners, path also advanced the promising rts, a malaria vaccine candidate, which was shown to reduce malaria episodes by one-third among african infants(about 270 cases averted per 1,000 infants)and by one-half among toddlers (about 750 cases averted per 1,000 toddlers) over the first year of follow-up.in china, we created a project development partnership with public- and private-sector partners to obtain who prequalification of vaccines for global procurement programs.project optimize, a path-who collaboration, made new strides toward strengthening the supply chains and systems that manage, store, and deliver vaccines to those who need them. Key achievements included a digital immunization registry in vietnam to monitor children due for vaccinations that reduced the time health workers spent recording data by hand, provided a way to remind mothers of upcoming vaccinations, and resulted in a marked increase in on-time vaccination rates. In south sudan, our tests of a cloud-based system to manage vaccine stocks using a cell phone provided a new way to track real-time supply and demand. The team explored the use of battery-free vaccine refrigerators and hybrid solar-electric systems to maintain the cold chain in rural areas, and electric vehicles and specially equipped trucks to streamline delivery. In addition, recognizing that vaccine introduction is accelerating worldwide, we created an interactive exhibit to introduce leaders, lawmakers, and stakeholders to vaccine supply and logistics systems and spark commitment and innovation to solve challenges.path's advocacy and communications efforts also achieved gains in 2012. As the leader of the vaccine implementation technical assistance consortium (vitac, formerly avi tac), we assisted the global alliance for vaccines and immunization (gavi) with communications and advocacy support, created a strategic forecasting tool to predict vaccine supply and demand, and demonstrated the impact of rotavirus and pneumococcal vaccines. Ghana and tanzania simultaneously introduced both vaccines into their national immunization programs, and path provided documentation, advocacy, and global media relations support for this bold effort. Health technologies:path develops and introduces appropriate, affordable technologies to address urgent health challenges, particularly in low-resource settings. Our low-cost, evidence-based products, designed with input from users and recipients, are transforming health worldwide. We also improve the technology and information systems that help health workers monitor and provide health services.path's diagnostics work includes developing or advancing affordable tests for the rapid detection of malaria, multidrug-resistant tb, neglected tropical diseases, sexually transmitted infections, and other health concerns. In 2012, the carehpv test, which detects the cause of cervical cancer, went on sale in china, and it will soon be available in india and other countries. The test was developed by path and qiagen, the trademark holder, for use in even basic health clinics, and can be used on samples self-collected by women.in cambodia, india, mexico, and tanzania, path evaluated new technologies to identify people living with diabetes. This included a rapid diagnostic test to screen pregnant women for gestational diabetes.in addition, we advanced a low-cost, point-of-care diagnostic test for onchocerciasis (river blindness) to aid global monitoring and elimination efforts, and identified a manufacturing partner to create and distribute the product. Path also advanced new treatment options for neglected tropical diseases, including a new antibiotic, called the paromomycin intramuscular injection (pmim), developed by our drug development program, path drug solutions, to treat visceral leishmaniasis. The injection was registered by the government of nepal, and we completed a phase 3(b) clinical trial in bangladesh, supporting efforts to register pmim there and contributing to a national elimination strategy.in addition, we continued work to develop an electricity-free non-instrumented nucleic acid amplification device. Designed to detect diseases, such as acute and infant hiv, that are otherwise challenging to diagnose in low-resource settings, this device will speed diagnosis and treatment.in 2012, we also continued our work to improve families access to safe water. For example, we developed design guidelines now being used by three chinese manufacturers selling low-cost household water filters. We used creative, market-based strategies, including microfinance loans and commercial partnerships, to provide thousands of low-income consumers in asia and africa with access to safe water. Our continued focus on effective, affordable family planning options included work to develop robust and sustainable markets for the effective, easy-to-use silcs diaphragm and to advance the woman's condom. Path designed both technologies to be acceptable, affordable, and accessible for users worldwide.finally, our health management information systems group continued to research, develop, and adapt information and communication technology products (e.g., computer software) to help health workers and leaders monitor and provide services at the local and national level. For example, we helped health workers from kenya, rwanda, senegal, and vietnam identify a set of business processes and user requirements common to their national supply chain systems, information that may be used to improve supply chains and logistics information management.
