Mission

Bellwether Housing's mission is to provide excellent affordable apartments that enable low-wage working people, their families and low-income seniors to live independently throughout their lives.

Bellwether Housing, founded by the Downtown Seattle Association in 1980, is the largest private nonprofit provider of affordable apartments in King County, Washington. Our residents are low-wage working people, low-income seniors, and those with special needs. The annual household incomes range from $18,000 to $50,000 depending on household size (30% to 60% of area median income for King County). Average annual household income for Bellwether residents in 2016 was approximately $25,083.

Bellwether receives a copy of the audit. Prior to the finalization of the audit, a copy of the audit is given to all of the board members for their comments. When the audit is up for bid, the Board discusses the relationship with the current auditors and makes a determination as to whether to maintain this relationship or change to a new auditing firm.

Part X, Line 2:

The Corporation is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Corporation also is not subject to state income tax in the State of Washington. Accordingly, no provision for federal and state taxes on revenue and income has been recognized in the accompanying financial statements.

It builds, acquires and preserves affordable apartments for the residents who need them (see program 4b and 4c below) and provides fee-based services to other nonprofits (see program 4d below). In addition, Bellwether coordinates services to residents, and advocates for resources and tools to increase future opportunities for affordable apartments.
