Activity 2

Seattle Market Gardens is a partnership between in-city farmers and consumers resulting in weekly deliveries of high-quality, farm fresh, organic produce during the growing season. In 2009 Seattle Market Gardens provided produce for approximately 70 households. Seattle Market Gardens' mission is to help establish safe, healthy communities and economic opportunity through development of community supported agriculture (CSA) enterprises in low-income neighborhoods. The program currently has two CSA gardens located and farmed by residents in Southeast and Southwest Seattle. Through collaboration between the City of Seattle P-Patch Gardening Proram, the City provides staff to work with these low-income communities to develop and manage the gardens. P-Patch Trust markets produce subscriptions, serves as the fiscal sponsor, and provides financial support for the program.

Activity 3

There are seventy-five p-patch community gardens distributed throughout the City of Seattle. These community gardens are open to the public to enjoy and are used as restorative spaces, learning/idea incubators, and places to gather and visit. Gardeners show their concern for the value of organic vegetables and community by supplying approximately 20,889 pounds of fresh produce to Seattle food banks and feeding programs each year. P-Patch Trust provides liability insurance and garden tools to the community gardens. P-Patch Trust also pays for garden plot usage fees for low-income gardeners who may otherwise be unable to benefit from gardening opportunities. P-Patch Trust's education mission is carried out through publication of the P-Patch Post, a quarterly newsletter that provides seasonal gardening tips, recipes, and stories on inspirational gardeners. Financial assistance is provided to Lettuce Link (a Solid Ground program) to distribute tons of fresh produce from the more than 60 community gardens to area food banks each year. P-Patch Trust is a member of Food Resource Network Federation. The Food Resource Network Federation was formed by area food providers seeking to move beyond the band aid response to people trying to meet their food needs through the emergency food system. Federation members are dedicated to enhancing the nutritional content of emergency food bags and increasing people's ability to meet their own food needs.
