Charity care and community benefits Peacehealth provides partial and full charity care to patients unable to pay for service ($55 million at cost). Bridge assistance patients receive care at reduced cost or no charge when it is determined that payment cannot be obtained through insurance, outside agencies, or private means. Peacehealth offers information to uninsured emergency and outpatients prior to admission. Bridge assistance is also available post-care through financial counseling. Other community benefit costs include the means-tested medicaid shortfall ($67 million), subsidized services provided at a financial loss ($26 million), non-healthcare community building activities ($302 thousand) and other services and contributions ($5 million).

Activity 3

Critical access hospitals and clinics Peacehealth operates three hospitals that are part of the medicare critical access hospital (CAH) program. Rural communities rely on their hospitals as critical components of the communities economic and social fabric. These hospitals are typically the largest or second largest employer in the community, and often stand alone in their ability to offer highly-skilled jobs. During fiscal year 2011, these facilities collectively admitted 64,267 outpatient registrations, and 2,816 inpatient admissions.
