IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0WTA BELIEVES THAT MOBILIZING HIKERS TO BECOME STEWARDS OF OUR TRAILS AND PUBLIC LANDS IS KEY TO CREATING A SUSTAINABLE TRAIL SYSTEM. OUR VOLUNTEER TRAIL MAINTENANCE PROGRAM IS AMONG THE LARGEST IN THE NATION, WITH MORE THAN 5,000 VOLUNTEERS CONTRIBUTING 171,000 HOURS OF DONATED LABOR IN 2018. WTA WORKED ON MORE THAN 250 TRAILS STATEWIDE LAST YEAR INCLUDING IN NATIONAL PARKS, NATIONAL FOREST AND ON A VARIETY OF STATE AND COUNTY LANDS. THESE EFFORTS NOT ONLY HELP ADDRESS THE SERIOUS MAINTENANCE BACKLOGS FACING STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES, THEY ALSO PROVIDE WTA WITH ON-THE-GROUND EXPERTISE AND SWEAT EQUITY TO HELP SHAPE DECISION MAKING ON RECREATION AND PUBLIC LANDS ISSUES. WORKING IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, WTA'S TRAIL MAINTENANCE APPROACH DEMONSTRATES WHAT INVESTMENTS ARE NECESSARY TO CREATE A TRAIL SYSTEM THAT CAN STAND THE TEST OF TIME AND PROVIDE A VARIETY OF QUALITY HIKING EXPERIENCES.
