Activity 2

Providing a supportive, engaging environment for the adults of our y family is at the core of our mission. Many of our adult members and program participants suffer from long-term health issues such as obesity, cancer, diabetes, and cardiac illness. They need a long-term solution to help them feel better, find encouragement to lead a healthy life, and get the necessary information/education they need to make healthy choices. Our programs are designed to help people create realistic goals for self-improvement, and emphasize disease prevention through regular exercise, proper nutrition, stress management and health education. The y partners with walla walla general hospital, providence st mary medical center, the walla walla clinic and other health care providers to make these programs successful. Medical grants are available to offset the financial burden of those with certain medical conditions including cancer, cardiac health, and pre-diabetes / diabetes in order to gain access to facilities, information, classes, and staff who can help these people continue the road toward a healthy lifestyle. During 2012, the ymca gave more than $16,000 in medical scholarships to make this participation possible.
