Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The grip program is an evidence-based methodology developed over 25 years of work with thousands of incarcerated people and many victims/survivors. Rooted in restorative justice principles, the program's trauma-informed model integrates cutting-edge neuroscience research. Students engage in a yearlong, in-depth journey to comprehend the origins of their violence and develop skills to track and manage strong impulses rather than acting out in harmful ways. They transform destructive beliefs and behaviors into an attitude of emotional intelligence that prevents re-victimization.

Our mission is to create the personal and systematic change to turn violence and suffering into opportunities for learning and healing.

The conflict of interest policy is distributed annually at a regularly scheduled board of directors meeting. Completed disclosures are collected during the meeting. Anyone absent is sent a copy for completion. Disclosure of conflict involving board directors should be made available to the board to determine whether a material conflict exists. In the presence of an existing material conflict, the board will determine whether the contemplated transaction may be authorized as just, fair and reasonable to the organization. It will be to the board's sole discretion to determine the matter, taking into consideration the welfare of the organization and the advancement of its purpose

The compensation of the executive director and top management is reviewed and approved bi-annually by the board of directors using data that is comparable for qualified persons in functionally comparable positions within similar organizations. Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 3

As a result of the covid pandemic, grip temporarily moved its primary program from being an in-person delivery model inside the prisons, to a corresdondence format. We continued to offer the program to all students who had been enrolled when the pandemic shutdown began.

Part XII, Line 1

On january 1, 2020, the organization changed its accounting method from cash to accrual. The applicant is requesting accrual method of accounting to reflect financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.

Part XI, Line 8

Prior to receiving their irs approval of 501(c)3 status in november 2019, the organization had a fiscal sponsor that collected donations on the organization's behlaf. The organization had no access to these contributions until 12/31/19, which was the date the organization terminated its agreement with the sponsor after receiving its tax-exempt status. This adjustment to prior period retained earnings is due the organization's fiscal sponsor transferring access of a bank account to the organization on 12/31/2019 upon termination of the agreement.
