“The shed is a new cultural institution of and for the 21st century. We produce and welcome innovative art and ideas, across all forms of creativity, to build a shared understanding of our rapidly changing world and a more equitable society. In our highly adaptable building on manhattan's west side, the shed brings together established and emerging artists to create new work in fields ranging from pop to classical music, painting to digital media, theater to literature, and sculpture to dance. We seek opportunities to collaborate with cultural peers and community organizations, work with like-minded partners, and provide unique spaces for private events. The shed was designed to break with the traditions that separate art forms and audiences. By minimizing social and economic barriers to entry, we offer a warm, welcoming space for innovation and dialogue. Embracing technology, we work with creative thinkers and partners to create transformational digital experiences on-site and online. Using our flexible infrastructure and operational capabilities, we can produce performances, exhibitions, events, and gatherings of almost any type in expansive, multi use venues that allow for social distancing. Driven by our belief that access to new art and ideas is a right, not a privilege, we present engaging experiences and forge deep bonds between our artists and audiences. As an independent nonprofit that values invention, equity, and generosity, we are committed to advancing art forms, addressing the urgent issues of our time, and making our work impactful, sustainable, and relevant to the local community, the cultural sector, new york city, and beyond.”
“The effect (march 3 - 31, 2024): written by lucy prebble, directed by jamie lloyd, the effect questions the line between love and ethics as two people settle into a drug trial, then begin to fall in love. This production was presented by the shed and the national theatre, in association with the jamie lloyd company, and featured michele austin, paapa essiedu, kobna holdbrook-smith, and taylor russell. The breakdown odyssey by ms. Boogie (september 14, 2024): brooklyn-based rapper ms. Boogie presented a two-show, one-night-only performance of her debut album, the breakdown. Live in the griffin theater, ms. Boogie performed the album in totality. Alongside minneapolis-based producer m. Jamison, ms. Boogie debuted never-before-heard remixes and fresh takes for a full sonic experience of this transformative album that addresses the exclusion of black trans women in hip hop culture and the world, providing "an intimate look into the oft-unseen realities of sex work and trans survival (pitchfork)." king lear (october 26 - december 15, 2024): kenneth branagh played the title role in a sold-out production of william shakespeare's king lear, set in the barbarous landscape of ancient britain. Featuring a cast of rising stars from the royal academy of dramatic art and co-directed by rob ashford, branagh, and lucy skilbeck, lear released the play's power and turmoil in a fast-paced staging with a running time familiar to the pace of cinema. With the daily telegraph calling its london production "a playful, furious, magnificent lear," the u.s. Production emphasized the physical and the intimate, inviting audience engagement that speaks to the rapidity and urgency of our time with this open, democratic staging. This strictly limited, exclusive us engagement of king lear ran for 50 performances.”
“Armando guadalupe cortes, lizania cruz, bryan fernandez, luis a. Gutierrez, jeffrey meris, calli roche, and sandy williams iv. Summer sway (july 12 - august 16, 2024): inspired by the inclusion of breakdancing in the 2024 summer olympics, the shed celebrated the roots of hip hop by digging into the art forms and styles it has inspired - from breaking and graffiti to djing and mcing. On friday evenings, some of the city's fiercest djs, dance collectives, and artists brought a party to the plaza with free performances centering queer, trans, and bipoc community-based and community-born art. These included: jose parla, clave y cuba, papi juice, soul summit, ladies of hip-hop, quiana parks and guests artists for a dance cypher, and dj perly. Every day of the week, visitors explored our public art installation-including a playlist, a graffiti artwork by quone, and a timeline of hip hop's living history by rakia seaborn-that highlights the movement's global social impact. The installation was produced by neon fab studios. To kick off the summer event, we partnered with west side fest to produce a special community performance. West side fest (july 12 - 14, 2024): the shed and our neighbors in the west side cultural network came together for the second annual west side fest: a weekend of free admission, special indoor and outdoor programming, crafts for kids, artmaking for all ages, and more. The shed hosted visitors for a public art installation on the plaza, celebrating the roots of hip hop, the legacy of breaking, djing, mcing, and graffiti, and the myriad forms and genres which they inspire. The structures visually and sonically asked folks to consider the depth of these roots, alongside hip-hop's global impact on society.other organizations who participated in west side fest include the whitney museum of american art, poster house, hill arts foundation, hudson river park, westbeth artists residence, little island, west village rehearsal co-op, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community center, the new york city aids memorial park, new york live arts, the kitchen, the rubin museum of art, the high line, and the center for art, research and alliances (cara). Open call 2024 performances (june 20 - august 17, 2024): in summer 2024, in the shed's griffin theater, the remaining eight commissions of the open call program feature immersive, multidisciplinary performances. Artists presenting performances include cain coleman, kyle dacuyan, kayla hamilton, nile harris, nic kay, asia stewart, yaa samar! Dance theatre, and garrett zuercher.”
“At the time of filing form 990, the shed's audited financial statements have not yet been issued. The organization's financial statement audit for the year ended december 31, 2024 is underway, and no substantial changes are expected that would affect the 2024 form 990.”
