| Exhibition ProgramThe primary purpose of the organization is to educate the public about science, mathematics and technology. To further this aim the Institute creates exhibitions. In 2015 we staged two major exhibition sof our Crochet Coral Reef project, which educates the public about geometry, marine biology and the ecology of the sea, at the Southwest Museum of Art in San Antonio (Texas) and at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, where it shared the bill with Leonardo da Vinci's Leicester Codex. Both exhibitions were large-scale solo showings for the IFF. Also during 2015, the IFF constructed a new, expanded version of our Bleached Reef, which was included in a large exhibition at the Jewish Contemporary Museum in San Francisco, entitled "Night Begins the Day." Works by the IFF were also included in the 2015 French Design Biennale in Lyon, France. In addition, during 2015 the IFF worked with the University of California, Santa Cruz (CA) and the Museum of Arts and Design (NY, NY) to design and plan large-scale exhibitions of the Reef project that will be staged in 2016 and 2017. Days/hours of service provided: 234 days Number of clients served: 7950 people | $0 | $60,270 |
| Publication ProgramIn order to provide educational tools for the public and teachers, the Institute publishes books, brochures and articles about our lecture and exhibition topics. At the start of 2015, the Institute published a book about our Crochet Coral Reef project, now the largest community science and art project in the world. The book is a 208 page, full-color volume that documents the history of this ten-year long endeavor and includes essays on the science, mathematics and environmental issues behind the project, as well as its relationship to the history of art and social practice. The book includes essays by IFF directors Margaret Wertheim and Christine Wertheim, IFF assistant director Anna Mayer, plus scholars Leslie Dick (California Institute of the Arts), Marion Endt-Jones (Manchester Museum) and Donna Haraway (University of California San Diego). The book became available to the public in February and has since sold most of its print-run. It was picked up for international distribution by art-book distributor DAP, through whom it is available to museums around the world. Also in 2015, we continued to offer our book A Field Guide to Hyperbolic Space, and our book The Figure that Stands Behind Figures. Both books are about mathematical topics. Days/hours of service provided: N/A for a publicationNumber of clients served: more than 1000 Crochet Coral Reef books were sold (out of the first print run of 2000). Plus we sold 190 of our other books. | $0 | $8,587 |
| Lecture and Workshop ProgramIn conjunction with exhibitions, the Institute holds public educational lectures. These events serve an extensive educational need, specifically by reaching women, who are statistically underserved by science education. In 2015 lectures were held at the Southwest School of Art and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, as well as the University of Melbourne, Deakin University, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Australian Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. Also during 2015, the IFF continued to expand its community-based Satellite Reef program, bringing this unique intersection of art, science, math and environmentalism to communities worldwide. New Satellite Reefs were constructed in workshops by held in Minneapolis and San Antonio, and community efforts continued in Queensland, Australia. Here, hundreds of community members came together to create large-scale sculptural installations of coral reefs that were exhibited throughout 2015. All events were free and open to the public.Days/hours of service provided: 8 daysNumber of clients served: 2600 people | $0 | $5,760 |
| Website ProgramThe Institute's website has become an important educational resource. In 2015 we maintained our Crochet Coral Reef website (www.crochetcoralreef.org). This site provides a huge amount of freely available educational material about coral reefs, marine ecology and the mathematics that underlies coral species. The site is widely used by teachers and community centers around the world. Additionally, 2000 people are signed up as active members to the Institute through our organization website, which has been linked to and cited by hundreds of other sites. The Institute continues to achieve these goals in ways that are rare for a small organization. During 2015, the Institute staged a large exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and at the Southwest School of Art in San Antonio, TX, as well as contributed to an exhibition at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, CA and to the French Design Biennale in Lyon, France. In addition, the IFF hosted public lectures and workshops on scientific themes at many venues including the Southwest School of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the University of Melbourne, Deakin University, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Australian Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. At the start of 2015, the Institute published a book about our Crochet Coral Reef, now the largest community science and art project in the world. Additionally in 2015, the Institute's Crochet Coral Reef project continued to be taken up by communities all over the world, including Minneapolis, San Antonio, Del Rio, TX, and community efforts continued in Queensland, Australia. The Institute remains deeply committed to its role as a public educator and produces an extensive website that is freely available as a global educational resource. In 2015 we maintained and developed www.crochetcoralreef.org , a website devoted exclusively to our Coral Reef project. This site is widely used by teachers and community centers across the USA and abroad. The IFF has only two part-time staff yet it has reached an audience that many larger institutions would be proud of. In 2015 the Institute's work was acknowledged by articles in many publications and public broadcasts, most notably in an academic book written by feminist science studies luminary Donna Haraway. |
