Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
In 2024, Art from the Inside (AFTI) implemented a transformative Art and Wellness Program at both MCF Shakopee and MCF Faribault, serving a total of 38 incarcerated individuals. The program combined trauma-informed art facilitation with wellness practices to promote healing, personal growth, and community-building among incarcerated participants. At MCF Shakopee, 16 women participated, reporting improvements in mental health, emotional resilience, and connection to family and culture. One participant noted, "I noticed my mental health improve rapidly over the 12 weeks," while another shared how the program deepened her bond with her child through artistic expression and cultural exploration. At MCF Faribault, 22 men engaged in the program. Participants emphasized the value of community and self-regulation, with one stating, "In stressful situations, I work on my breathing and I find calmness and peacefulness." The program created space for peer critique, trust-building, and re-establishing connections with loved ones. Across both sites, 28 of the 38 fellows were parents, and many expressed how the program helped rebuild family ties and foster deeper conversations with loved ones. The racial/ethnic makeup of participants reflected Minnesota's diverse incarcerated population: 26% White, 22% American Indian, 17% Black, 17% Hispanic, and 17% Asian. Overall, the program fostered emotional healing, artistic development, and a strong sense of belonging for incarcerated individuals, advancing AFTI's mission of using art to transform lives and promote community healing inside and beyond prison walls.$0$46,571
Art from the Inside (AFTI) advances its exempt purpose by using art to inspire healing, connection, and transformation for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals. In the current year, AFTI organized multiple art exhibits featuring work created by incarcerated artists in Minnesota correctional facilities. These exhibits, displayed in public venues such as libraries, government offices, and community spaces, reached hundreds of community members and elevated the voices of people impacted by incarceration.$0$32,430
In Summer 2024, Art from the Inside (AFTI) piloted a Justice Re-Imagined Youth Fellowship designed to support young people impacted by incarceration through creative expression, mentorship, and community building. The program provided a safe, supportive environment for youth to explore their identities, express emotions, and build resilience through visual art and wellness practices. Over the course of the summer, youth participants engaged in weekly workshops that included painting, storytelling, group dialogue, and community building activities. The program was facilitated by local artists and returning neighbors who served as powerful role models, demonstrating how creativity and healing are possible even in the face of trauma and systemic challenges. A key component of the program was a culminating community art exhibit, where participants shared their work with families, mentors, and community members. Youth spoke about how the program helped them process difficult emotions, connect with others who shared similar life experiences, and build confidence in their voice and creativity.$0$14,420
