Art from the Inside takes a multi-faceted approach to giving a voice to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists. Art from the Inside creates the opportunity for incarcerated artsits to have a visual voice through engaging community-centered exhibitions of their art. We host exhibits at a range of venues with the goal of making art accessible to anyone. We incorporate community disucssions and educational opportunities at each exhibit. We provide economic empowerment for the artists we work with through the sale of original art and prints. We are committed to taking a community-centered approach that includes education advocacy for a successful transition back into the community as part of our scope. We support incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals through the arts by promoting personal transformation, community engagement, and public education about the criminal justice system through exhibiting art created by people incarcerated in our state, supporting returning

| In 2024, Art from the Inside (AFTI) implemented a transformative Art and Wellness Program at both MCF Shakopee and MCF Faribault, serving a total of 38 incarcerated individuals. The program combined trauma-informed art facilitation with wellness practices to promote healing, personal growth, and community-building among incarcerated participants. At MCF Shakopee, 16 women participated, reporting improvements in mental health, emotional resilience, and connection to family and culture. One participant noted, "I noticed my mental health improve rapidly over the 12 weeks," while another shared how the program deepened her bond with her child through artistic expression and cultural exploration. At MCF Faribault, 22 men engaged in the program. Participants emphasized the value of community and self-regulation, with one stating, "In stressful situations, I work on my breathing and I find calmness and peacefulness." Across both sites, 28 of the 38 fellows were parents, and many expressed how the program helped rebuild family ties and foster deeper conversations with loved ones. The racial/ethnic makeup of participants reflected Minnesota's diverse incarcerated population: 26% White, 22% American Indian, 17% Black, 17% Hispanic, and 17% Asian.
