Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Media and Human Rights Community received funding from the National Endowment for Democracy, an international donor funded by the United States Congress, to monitor press and media freedoms in Egypt. We monitored, documented and reported on 781 violations against journalists and media professionals in 2024. We documented 610 violations related to withholding payment from journalists, including a case where 200 journalists had their salaries withheld in one single press organization. We documented 74 violations of renewed pretrial detention against journalists with politicized criminal cases. Other noteworthy violations included arbitrary dismissals of journalists, arrests of journalists and media professionals, preventing media coverage, and physical assault and verbal threats against journalists by security officials, among others.$41,500$41,500
Media and Human Rights Community received funding from the UK-based Media Defence to support media and journalism freedoms in Egypt through legal support to journalists and media professionals and legal research. In addition, we published five other legal papers on the increasing cost of court fees and its negative impact on litigation and legal defense, pretrial detention as a tool to restrict freedom of expression, arbitrary dismissals of newspaper editors from the journalists syndicate, the cybercrime law and its restrictions on the freedom of information, and pretrial detention usage as a result of authorities refusing to adhere to the penal code. The legal research included monthly and quarterly legal reports and an annual report on our legal support and legal trends related to the media environment. We also received support contributing to our legal support to journalists and media professionals, which helped 53 individuals in 15 criminal cases and 34 labor disputes cases in court, Ministry of Justice and within the journalist's syndicate.$36,524$36,524
Media and Human Rights Community received funding from Czech-based People in Need to provide legal support to ensure the respect of journalism and media freedoms in Egypt. This included publishing a research paper on the effects of restrictive laws and regulations on journalism, a report on the threat posed by rising prices in cameras and photography equipment to photojournalists, a paper on the negative effects of the labor law on working women, an evaluation of the performance of the newly elected journalist syndicate council, and two guides on ethically covering funerals for photojournalists and gender-sensitive writing for journalists. We received support contributing to our legal support to journalists and media professionals, which helped 53 individuals in 15 criminal cases and 34 labor disputes cases in court, Ministry of Justice and within the journalist's syndicate. These mostly focused on arbitrary or wrongful dismissal of journalists by their employees with 32 cases filed. For criminal issues, we provided support on cases which included charges of spreading false news, joining a terrorist group, using an internet account to commit a crime, and protesting without a permit, among others. The legal support included attending investigations, detention renewal sessions, pleading before courts, writing lawsuits, appealing judgements, and appearing before committees and courts.$33,653$33,653
