| Youth Programs/Reading Literacy: Roughly 30 students enrolled in StriveCLT'safterschool program received 20-minutes of tutoring 3 days a week by volunteers using the evidence-based Active Reading program. Homework assistance was identified by parents as a priority, so staff partnered with the children's classroom teachers to receive the students' assignments at the beginning of each week to determine the guided lessons to practice daily in the afterschool, leading to consistent 100 percent homework completion rates. Instructors provided weekly social-emotional experiences as well as academic and recreational activities. When the 2022-2023 school year ended, StriveCLT implemented a 4-week long summer enrichment camp that included 60 minutes daily infusion of reading literacy, in addition to academic and recreational activities. Kindergarten and first grade students practiced word fluency, and students in grades 2 - 4 practiced reading sight words, aloud and silently. All groups had grade level math lessons. Enrichment activities included weekly classes in yoga and computer instruction in coding; 3 field trips with parent chaperones to a children's library, science museum, and trampoline park; biweekly art lessons, and readings by 2 diverse book authors. At the end of summer camp, students were given books for their home libraries as well as hygiene items. The fall new school year opened with more than 30 students enrolled in the StriveCLT afterschool program. In addition to the afterschool program coordinator and a tutor facilitator, who were the first hires in its afterschool, StriveCLT hired two additional part-time staff, adding another instructor to the staff roster as well as one to provide classroom logistical support. With reading literacy for K-3rd grade children being the cornerstone of our holistic model, our youth programs became key for delivering our mission in 2023, the first full year of operations for StriveCLT. Children's books were mostly donated , so other than program-related materials, supplies, and field trips, most of our expense was for staff wages, including additional personnel hired to operate the expanded afterschool program as well as the new summer program. No grants were paid to others to implement this program, however StriveCLT received a county grant (ARPA funds) to provide substantial financial support for internal staff to expand child development education in Southside Homes. A corporate grant received at the end of 2022 provided additional funds for unrestricted operational and program support. | - | $116,535 |
| Civic and Community Engagement:To promote information-sharing and community neighborliness, StriveCLT heldintergenerational Village Gatherings to discuss topics in which residents had expressed interest to benefit their lives. The first was a family law circle gathering to informally discuss Child Support and Child Custody, topics of keen interest in a low- wealth community where 85% of the heads of households are African-American women. Discussion was led by a district court judge who is a StriveCLT board member. The second Village Gathering on What's in Your Social-Emotional Toolkit was led by a social worker and therapist, and focused on effective techniques to help individuals manage life's challenges while experiencing tough times. A Village Gathering on Senior Digital Literacy was held in December 2023 by the StriveCLT Executive Director to address older residents' concern about their lack of computer skills that they were afraid would impede their ability to successfully navigate the public housing's new on line portal system. Their concern was the new requirement to conduct their residency needs on line - going forward - including the recertification process which would allow them to continue living on the public housing property. The residents' outspoken needs to learn more about computers - even though they were intimidated by the prospect - led to StriveCLT agreeing to partner with other nonprofits to develop and implement appropriately scaled computer classes in 2024.StriveCLT also utilized field trips to engage residents in experiences with others outside of Southside Homes. We sponsored a field trip on MLK Day to volunteer at a global charity, packing shoes to be sent overseas to needy communities. Another informative and fun field trip was to the local Museum of Illusions in Uptown Charlotte where Southside Homes family members of all ages had fun interacting with their own and other visiting families. StriveCLT sponsored 5 family field trips outside of Southside Homes in 2023. We also supported a community-wide event inside the community when lnlivian life coaches decided to host a Back-to-School Summer bash (community fair). StriveCLT supported the event by providing hygieneand cleaning products as requested by residents. | - | $7,094 |
| Digital and Financial Literacy: Digital Literacy: StriveCLT conducted an on line and written survey to obtain information about Southside Homes residents' computer and internet usage to gauge the readiness of residents for computer classes. Nearly 20% of the residents participated in the survey. A finding was that many of the nearly 400 households in the community did not have broadband in their homes, and most residents used cellphones more often than computers to access the internet. Our first foray into digital literacy at Southside Homes was in encouraging afterschool parents to take a 60 minutes on line training in Active Reading through the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library to learn how to read to their kids to promote vocabulary comprehension just as the volunteers do when they tutored their children each week. Parents who completed the training were given a laptop for their personal and family use. In addition, upon learning that several afterschool parents had dropped out of school early without graduating from high school once they had a child, StriveCLT explored digital literacy options to provide an alternative and convenient way for residents to earn their GED onsite - despite their lack of lack of transportation, childcare, or education funds. Becoming a GEDWorks sponsor, we enrolled 6 students (5 minimum was the requirement) in an all-virtual GED program, covering the full costs for each resident's personal advisor, counselor, academic classes, tutoring, and tests - all online. At no cost to participants, we distributed laptops to students who did not have one. To promote an intergenerational approach to digital literacy, we built into our summer camp curriculum Tech Tuesdays each of the four weeks and hired a computer science instructor to teach coding to the K-5 kids enrolled in our summer camp. Further exploring opportunities to tackle the digital divide as one of our pillar goals, StriveCLT conducted a group meeting with older residents in December 2023 to discuss their self-identified need to learn more about how to use computers. They shared that such instruction was needed to enable them to access the recently developed public housing on line portal to re-certify their residential status as well as conduct residential business. StriveCLT committed to partner with lnlivian and two other key community partners-Center for Digital Literacy and E2D - to provide onsite senior digital literacy classes beginning in 2024. Our expenses for delivering mission work in digital literacy were reduced because of our relationship with community partners which enabled our nonprofit to giveaway 25 laptops at no cost to parents participating in StriveCLT programming.Financial Literacy: At the request of CORE, lnlivian's public housing 501(c)3 organization in Charlotte, NC, StriveCLT conducted 3 workshops- at no charge - for more than 50 individuals as part of lnlivian's Applicant Training Program for those seeking to buy homes using Section 8 vouchers. The discussion topics included a budgeting overview about savings, spending plans, banking using savings and checking accounts, and credit card basics. To further its focus on financial literacy as one of the skillsets we championed, StriveCL T worked closely with Commonwealth, a local community partner, to recruit Southside Homes residents and StriveCLT staff to join their savings program for a 100% match at year end. By depositing $20 in a designated credit union every two weeks to save $520 in one year, that investment will double to $1040 when matched by Commonwealth at the end of one year. The elementary school aged children enrolled in the afterschool and summer camp were also able to explore concepts of financial literacy through flash cards and board games, with Junior Monopoly becoming one of their favorites. The mission goals in both digital and financial literacy were inexpensive because of equipment donated - 25 laptops for residents and 2 iPads for use in the afterschool program - that did not have to be purchased by StriveCLT. | - | $5,966 |
