“OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Honoring Our Guardians-Activities 2022 Over the last year, the Guardians have been meeting online fairly regularly every month or sometimes every six weeks. We meet as a bilingual group across multiple time zones; English/Brazilian Portuguese (with simultaneous interpretation) with the Guardians from the Reese River Valley, Turtle Island (United States), the Great Ocean States of the Pacific (Fiji and Aotearoa/New Zealand), and the (Brazilian) Amazon. We hired a Honoring Our Guardians coordinator to support these activities and help hold and facilitate these spaces: Perse(phone) Hooper Lewis, who is a long-time friend and ally and one of the guardians since the beginning of the initiative. Over the course of the project, the Reese River Valley Project has wild harvested and processed important plants, shared stories of the land and their experiences, and created a bingo game in the language of the valley, which was shared with youth participating in the annual Shoshonean Reunion. More recently, they came together with a researcher from the University of San Diego to GIS map their region and its locations of significance, such as buildings, plants and animals and the springs. It is the first attempt of this kind to create a story map that combines mapping technology and the knowledge and stories of the elders. Our Honouring Our Guardians coordinator also spoke at the Ars Electronica festival in Linz, Austria, in September 2022. She joined the panel Urgent Crises, Slow Solutions: A Conversation about the Open Movement, Craft Technologies and a Sustainable Internet, and made interventions centered on Indigenous knowledges and communities, and what we imagine for our shared futures. We supported the Brazilian indigenous guardians in their journey with ANMIGA (the National Articulation of Indigenous Women Warriors of Ancestry, the organizational home for our Guardians Snia Guajajara, Clia Xakriab and Braulina Baniwa). Leading up to the elections, a group of Indigenous women leaders from the group engaged in a country-wide journey across several Brazilian biomes, hosting approximately 40 meetings with Indigenous women to learn and share their stories, knowledges, and courage together. The group hosted workshops to discuss a variety of topics that are affecting the lives of Indigenous women in Brazil, in particular climate change, violence against Indigenous women and the political candidacies of Indigenous women. Both Snia Guajajara and Clia Xakriab, who were running for office, won their seats in Congress with the support of over 100,000 voters each. We hosted a special Guardians conversation with an Indigenous Maori scholar, Naomi Simmonds, who has been doing similar work with journeys in Aotearoa. Along with six other people, she went on a three-week hikoi (journey) across the North Island to retrace the steps of one of the ancestress Mahinaarangi, and reconnect with their tribal stories, knowledge, lands, lakes and rivers along the way. We hosted a conversation with Maureen and some of the other Guardians while she was in Glasgow at COP26, and amplified Snia and Clias leadership of the Brazilian delegation through our social media channels (see other examples of our amplification work here and here). OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Whose Digital Archives-Activities 2022 Expanded Decolonizing the Archives team at Whose Knowledge? Focused strongly on the intersections and innovations of Black Archival Practice and Black Digital Practice. Led conversation about digital challenges with liberatory archives and made meaningful contributions to transnational archives spaces. Continuing to develop and articulate our vision and strategy for archives, and integrating it with other programs.
