“Explanation of $750 Land Purchase Omission in 2022: In 2022, Umoja Debate League purchased land for $750 as part of our effort to establish Umoja Village, a community space that includes a garden, free little library, and space for local events. Unfortunately, this land purchase was omitted from our 2022 Form 990-EZ filing due to an oversight. The land purchase was made in 2022 but was not included in the reported assets for that year. For clarity and transparency, the land purchase of $750 is now reflected in the 2023 Form 990-EZ as part of our revenue in other revenue and assets, under Land and Buildings (Line 23). This adjustment ensures that Umoja Debate Leagues financials accurately reflect the assets held by the organization as of December 31, 2023. This correction does not affect the revenue or public support calculations for 2023, as the land was purchased in 2022 and does not involve any public contributions. Explanation of Other Expenses ($6,069): The $6,069 in Other Expenses for 2023 reflects costs that were critical to supporting our mission and programs, specifically related to Umoja Village and other operational activities. Below is the breakdown of these expenses: Program Materials and Supplies ($3,293): This category includes purchases for materials essential to the Umoja Debate Leagues debate programs and Umoja Village. This includes educational supplies such as research tools, books, and other resources used to support our debate teams. Additionally, this covers materials related to Umoja Village, such as garden tools and supplies, art materials for community projects, and any other program-related assets that directly support our youth and community engagement efforts. Home Depot Supplies ($2,000): These expenses were related to supplies purchased from Home Depot to support the development and maintenance of Umoja Village. This includes materials for the community garden (e.g., soil, plants, gardening tools) and infrastructure needs (e.g., wood, paint, and other building supplies). These supplies are essential for maintaining the ?blight to beauty initiative at Umoja Village, addressing local nutrition deserts, and promoting community engagement through sustainable green spaces. Miscellaneous Cash App Payments ($1,500): This category includes Cash App transactions used for small operational expenses, including reimbursements to staff for program-related purchases. These expenses support day-to-day operations, including minor program-related costs that ensure the smooth delivery of our youth-focused initiatives and community events. These Other Expenses were vital to ensuring that Umoja Debate League continued to provide free, impactful programs to Detroit youth and engaged the surrounding community.
