Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 28

Gdla action fund, inc. Is an issue organization that helps the georgia defense lawyers association (gdla) implement its mission, which includes improving the operation of the legal system, eliminating court congestion and delays in civil litigation, promoting fairness and balance in the administration of justice, and increasing the quantity and quality of legal services rendered to the community, state, and nation. To this end, gdla action fund, inc. Has created a legislative action committee, which consists of several members of gdla, and since 2021 has retained a lobbyist to promote its legislative goals in the georgia general assembly. Each year, our lobbyist monitors many bills that are of interest to gdla's members and their clients, and, in consultation with the legislative action committee, he advocates for gdla's position on these bills on a daily basis at the capitol during the legislative session. In 2023, the lobbyist monitored at least 18 bills and provided weekly updates to gdla's entire membership about the status and progress of those bills. To support his efforts, we often ask gdla's members to call and/or e-mail various legislators to educate them about bills they are considering and to express their support or opposition for particular bills. Our members did that during the 2023 legislative session for bills relating to the seat belt defense, the direct action statute, the premises liability statute, and the proposed candor act. One member also testified in the senate judiciary committee against the proposed candor act, and that bill ended up not being enacted. Finally, we worked with the georgia trial lawyers association and others on a compromise bill that increased the minimum amount in controversy for a case in the state courts to qualify for a 12-person jury from 25,000 to 50,000.
