“In 2022, the founders of NOMAD Science Mongolia, Inc. resumed their efforts to salvage and protect Mongolian cultural heritage, primarily by focusing on protecting and researching threatened archaeological resources. Though the program leaders are experts in their field with decades of experience in Mongolia, this was the first time the project was run since incorporating as a 501(c)3 in 2021. In 2022, the team surveyed and recorded several hundred new archaeological sites, noted hundreds of instances of looting (which were then reported to local government officials), and salvaged thousands of artifacts from tombs that had been visited by looters. These priceless artifacts have been turned over to the Cultural Heritage Center of Mongolia for preservation and curation within the Mongolian museum system. Without this intervention, these important relics of worldwide heritage improtance would have been lost forever. Additionally, NOMAD Science Mongolia, Inc. acts as a field school, providing hands-on education for students (mostly university level) who may have had classroom instruction, but are lacking field experience. In 2022, we organized 4 courses and taught a total of 41 students from the USA, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, and more. Tuition payments/donations and grants covered program expenses which included international travel to Mongolia for some instructors, domestic travel to and around the sites, food, lodging, permits, equipment, and associated fees in Mongolia. Resuming operations in 2022 was particularly important as preservation activities on the ground were greatly needed and missed during our hiatus for COVID-19, and because students had been unable to get the necessary field experience for continuing education or job placement during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
