Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The center for justice innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a fair, effective, and humane justice system and build strong, thriving communities.

The center for justice innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a fair, effective, and humane justice system and build strong, thriving communities.we plan, implement, and operate new programs that address urgent issues related to safety, justice, and community well-being. Our projects include community-based violence prevention projects, alternatives to incarceration, reentry initiatives, and court-based programs that reduce the use of unnecessary incarceration and promote positive individual and family change. Some of our projects are big, serving thousands of people each year. And some are small, working intensively with a few dozen people at a time. Consistent with our values, our approach is collaborative and inclusive; we seek to include the voices of all constituencies impacted by the issue or proposed program during the planning process. This means we routinely invite into the planning process not only representatives of the justice system.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The chief financial officer and the controller are primarily responsible for the review of the form 990 which is prepared by the organization's auditors. The information on the form 990 is compared to the audited financial statements line by line. Supplemental information which does not appear in the audited financial statements is compared to the source documentation which was prepared for the form 990 preparer. All of the other questions are reviewed for accuracy. After the form 990 is approved by the controller, the chief executive officer performs a cursory review of the form 990 and if it is satisfactory, approves it for submission. In addition, the 990 is sent to the finance committee prior to submission, and members can provide input before the form is filed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Upon joining the board, new members are informed of the agency's policy regarding conflicts of interest and are given a written copy of the conflict of interest policy. In addition to ongoing obligations to report any conflict of interest to the board, on an annual basis, board members and key persons of the organization are required to fill out an annual questionnaire to disclose any actual or potential conflicts of interest. The policy also sets forth when a related party transaction would be presented to the board and set the standard by which the board would review such transaction for approval.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The salary of the chief executive officer is determined by the board by evaluating comparability data and other appropriate factors as part of the organziation's executive compesnation policy. In addition, the board conducts regular performance reviews of the chief executive officer which also informs its salary setting decision.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0COMMUNITY SAFETY: TOO OFTEN, INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSES TO ISSUES OF CRIME AND SAFETY ARE PURELY REACTIVE, COMING INTO PLAY ONLY AFTER HARM HAS BEEN DONE. THE CENTER FOR JUSTICE INNOVATION TAKES AN "UPSTREAM" APPROACHPLANTING THE SEEDS FOR GENUINE, LONG-TERM SAFETY AND JUSTICE BY INVESTING IN COMMUNITIES. FACTORS AFFECTING COMMUNITY SAFETY AND WELL-BEING INCLUDE ECONOMIC AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES, ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE AND QUALITY HOUSING, STRONG FAMILY AND COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS, MEDICAL CARE AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES, AND MORE, AND SO OUR PROGRAMMING SUPPORTS THOSE NEEDS. WE RECOGNIZE THAT RESIDENTS ARE THE EXPERTS ON THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES, AND THAT NO DECISIONS ABOUT JUSTICE AND SAFETY CAN BE ADEQUATE WITHOUT INCORPORATING THE PERSPECTIVES AND PARTICIPATION OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS THEMSELVES.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0POLICY:FOCUSED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CENTER'S POLICY PRIORITIES AND NEW VENTURES, WITH AN EYE TOWARD ADVANCING LEADING-EDGE IDEAS AND PRACTICES ACROSS THE ORGANIZATION. IN ADDITION, THE POLICY TEAM IS FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING EFFICIENT, EVIDENCE-BASED COURT PRACTICES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NEW YORK STATE UNIFIED COURT SYSTEM, AS WELL AS OTHER CRIMINAL JUSTICE STAKEHOLDERS. THIS WORK INCLUDES DEVELOPING A MODEL FOR INDIVIDUALIZED JAIL POPULATION REVIEW THAT AIMS TO REDUCE THE NEW YORK CITY JAIL POPULATION IN ORDER TO HELP ENSURE THE CLOSURE OF RIKERS ISLAND, AND TO SERVE AS A MODEL FOR OTHER LARGE JURISDICTIONS TO REDUCE PRETRIAL INCARCERATION.
