Knowledge is power strives to offset the needs of 32,000+ des moines public school (dmps) students, staff, administration and teachers by offering financial support to purchase basic needs, programming opportunities for students, and supplies for school staff. Through knowledge is power, the foundation provides assistance where other supports cannot or have not reached: creation of student calm down rooms and student lounges; culturally inclusive school counseling library and trauma-informed care resources; field trip and camp fees for students; and dollars for personal and family emergency needs of students and families. Through these funds, families have been able to afford rent, keep utilities on, pay medical bills, buy winter clothing, and have food at home during holiday/winter school breaks, and more. Access to these essential items ensure students can continue attending school and receive a better education.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 29

Long shots is an annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament that brings together coaches, community members and athletes for a competition without financial obligation. Unlike other competitive sports that typically require a large financial commitment for families, this event brings money back in to the community through involvement of area small businesses, often minority- owned (if not all), to provide a clothing market, yoga, food, drinks, etc. The full- day event features music, art, family activities, competitive basketball and more. Another unique component of long shots is the give- back opportunities for student athletes through the provision of community giving grants to each school program. These school program awards support students in learning valuable lessons in how to support and care for their own communities as they become active citizens in the years to come, showing its never too early to be the difference in their communities.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 30

Art for all- the vision for the tactile mural and sensory wellness space was created in partnership with educators and administration at each school, recognizing the need for a safe space for students to decompress and reset their mental and emotional wellness while engaging their creativity, and jill wells, a renowned local artist and accessibility and diversity champion. The mural and wellness spaces are student-inspired and student-invested projects, providing the opportunities for students to be hands-on in the design and building of the space and fostering student empowerment in their ability to influence and be part of changing the environments around them.

Form 990-ez, Part III, Line 31

Creative coaches programming connects students and underserved youth to community mentors through specialty programming accessible to over 33,000 des moines public school students.
