Mission and Program Overview

Mission

STREAM Foundation was formed to educate, train, mentor and provide scholarship and internship opportunities to students from underrepresented groups in the area of asset management with the ultimate goal of increasing industry representations. In order to accomplish its goal, STREAM Foundation will utilize a two-pronged approach. First, STREAM Foundation provides education, training and networking opportunities for students from underrepresented minority groups. STREAM Foundation will also assist students in obtaining internships or other work experience with asset management firms in order to allow students to learn more about the industry, gain valuable experience and deepen and expand their professional networks. Second, STREAM Foundation will aim to create change in the asset management industry's recruiting, hiring and retention practices with respect to underrepresented minority candidates and employees. Finally, STREAM Foundation provides college students with scholarships.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
STREAM Foundation was formed in July 2020. We launched with limited resources, but with a vision to make the asset management industry more inclusive. In 2021 we had six internships for college students in Dallas, Texas, that were accompanied with six different asset management firms in Dallas. In 2022 that number has grown to twenty internships located in Dallas, Austin, Cincinnati, Houston, Fort Worth, and New York. Each of our interns is provided at a minimum $10,000 in total compensation via salary from the asset managers and/or scholarship assistance provided by our organization. During 2021, our organization granted $60,000 to our six interns. We are targeting forty internships for 2023 and are expanding into even more US cities. During the internships, we will host educational events with senior members of the investment community to (1) expand the students' network, (2) provide insights into asset management roles across all segments of the industry and/or (3) discuss experiences senior members working in asset management that are part of these underserved communities have faced and the challenges they have had to navigate. Another service that will be providing under the program is each student will be assigned a mentor from a different asset management firm to further expand his/her network and provide helpful insights and guidance. Two of our first six interns are graduating this May and both of them will be starting jobs within the industry at well-respected firms. We want to setup our alumni interns for success and provide career long support and mentorship. The other four of our 2021 interns are furthering their career in the industry through subsequent internships with reputable firms. We have assisted in placing them in these roles and will continue to be supportive as each enters the workforce. Each intern is also staying connected through our competition in the Portfolios with Purpose stock challenge where they are able to continue learning about the industry through their participation on our investment committee where we are competing for a grant against several well-known portfolio managers. We have brought awareness to the industry through educational presentations at several colleges, universities, and student organizations since our founding. These presentations were to move forward our cause of educating students from underserved communities about asset management and what our organization was doing to increase the number of roles for people from these communities. We also had our first annual educational event on February 18, 2022 with a few hundred college students attending both in-person and virtually. The event was hosted at Southern Methodist University and had several panels where students were able to hear from industry leaders from both the buy-side and sell-side. Lastly, we have begun brining awareness and educational content to younger students (High school) through a stock challenge that we are running through collaboration with BigBrotherBigSister Dallas, DISD, Young Women's Preparatory Network, UME Preparatory Academy, and Uplift Education. We have presented to high school students about the industry and hope to create a pipeline of talent that will eventually be attending college and can apply for the aforementioned internship opportunities. We are very excited about the things we are working on and the future growth that we're expecting!$60,000$6,600
