ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0The organization respectfully requests abatement of all late filing penalties and interest due to reasonable cause. The organization is a young organization recently formed in july of 2020. In its first year, the organization had limited funding, incurring many startup expenses, and whatever funds it had remaining were dedicated to its programming activities, as evidenced by the statement of functional expenses and net loss reported on this return. To reduce administrative expenses during its first year, the organization's CFO at the time attempted to prepare the 2020 Form 990 return herself as best she could. However, she was not an experienced tax preparer and did not realize the 990 return was required to be filed electronically. Consequently, the organization initially filed its 2020 Form 990 return by mail to the IRS in 2021. In 2022, the organization engaged a professional tax preparer to prepare and file its 2021 Form 990 return. It was only until then that the organization was informed by the preparer that the prior year return was required to be electronically filed and and because it was filed by mail, the return is delinquent. Immediately upon learning about the delinquency, the organization engaged the preparer to file this return electronically. The organization never acted willfully with respect to its failure to comply with its Form 990 filing requirements and only until recently, innocently believed that it was in compliance. It has also implemented safeguards to ensure future compliance going foward. Specifically, it has engaged a nonprofit tax preparer to assist with its tax compliance. It understands the severity of its failure to file Form 990s by the due date and will not fail to file timely going forward. The subject delinquency was a one-time oversight in large part due the organization's infancy and limited resources during its first year of operations. The organization is dedicated to helping people in its community and accomplishing as much programming as possible with the funds it has. As such, the payment of a large penalty would seriously hinder its ability to operate and carry out its charitable cause. For the foregoing reasons, the organization respectfully requests that the Internal Revenue Service abate any late filing penalties and interest assessed.
