Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line (28-31)

Line 28. (2022-2024 Community Garden Renovation project) In 2023, using ~$90,000 in capital grant funds and 2000+ hours of garden volunteer labor, ICG reconfigured and renovated a 2.2 acre city-wide community garden on city-owned land to accommodate over 175 garden plots and member households annually for the next 50 years. Improved accessibility with ADA raised bed plaza, added tool sheds with storage bays, installed a 400 sf timber frame pavilion to provide shade for gardeners and space for education and public events. De-compacted and improved soil of new and disturbed garden plot land. The reconfiguration and renovation was necessary due to a land swap between the City of Ithaca and neighboring developers of buildable garden land for vacant developer land under power line ROW, that changed boundaries of the Gardens and resulted in loss of shade-providing trees. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Line 29. Actively resumed primary program services of operating a 2.2 acre organic community garden open to residents of the City of Ithaca and environs, with particular outreach to low-income households and increasing accessibility for all. Began an extensive outreach and gardener recruitment campaign to let the Ithaca community know the community garden was open again and plots available. Registered 67 new and returning garden members, 69% with household incomes at 80% Area Medium Income or below, 39% in the very low and low income range. (It will take into the 2024 season to return to full occupancy following disruption of access to the Gardens and displacement of gardeners during 2022 and early 2023 reconfiguration work.) Oriented the new and returning gardeners in efficient water management, use of tools, weed control, cover cropping, and soil preparation. Garden volunteers began reestablishing ICG's food donation plots, and distributed over 255 lbs of food to local food banks, food donation sites and pantries that serve more than 2,100 people per week. Engaged garden members in more than 20 community-building workdays to maintain the Gardens common areas, compost systems, and assist in renovation of vacant plots and other efforts to improve the community garden's function and attractiveness as a public amenity.
