“This year presents many new things for Watermelon Mountain Ranch Animal Center. In early 2014 Mary Knight left Watermelon Ranch due to health concerns. After a promotion to interim Executive Director, Sara Garrigan was promoted to Executive Director in the spring. Sophia DiClemente as the President and Founder focuses on fundraising and estate planning. Improvements to Watermelon Mountain Ranch continued into 2014: -Expansion of the ranch to include Gunther's Village. This village included 5 new casitas to the ranch and increased overall capacity. -In November 2014, in cooperation with Petsmart Charities, Watermelon Mountain Ranch opened a brand new Everyday Adoption Center in the Petsmart on Eubank and I40. This location has the ability to hold an additional 15 dogs and 8 cats. This location helps to strengthen the bond with Albuquerque Animal Welfare. There are also several major projects that are on the horizon and are slated to begin in the next several months: -Adding barricades in between the kennel runs at the large dog cottage. This is to decrease "fence fighting" as well as decrease the transmission of disease between the runs. -The full enclosing of the lower kennels. This is to help control the heating and cooling of the lower kennel areas. This will also provide a measure of security for the dogs that are held in these kennels. -Enclosing the entire ranch with a chain link fence. Perimeter fencing would help to ensure dogs are not able to escape onto the mesa. The added fencing would also protect the assets of Watermelon Mountain Ranch more effectively. -Create/Build new offsite adoption kennels. New kennels are needed for the mega adoption events that are held 6 times a year. These kennels will be instrumental in the dogs comfort during these events. -A separate cat intake room for cats that are new to the facility. This will also make space for a quarantine area. -Increase of adoptions through public awareness and off site events. The Albuquerque metro area is not fully aware of the ranch and more public awareness is vital to the growth/survival of the ranch. Quality offsite locations are needed to give the animals more exposure and better chances of getting into a good home. Special Events: -In 2014 Watermelon Mountain Ranch Animal Center, participated in the 1st Annual Color Dash. This fun run 5k was directly benefitting the programs of WMR. Nearly 1000 people can out and participated in this 5k. The event was so successful that plans were made to hold the 2nd Annual race in April of 2015. -Fur Ball 2014 was held at the Marriott Pyramid and had an attendance of nearly 400 people. The theme for the year was "Bright Future" and tied in with an 80s style. The mayor of Rio Rancho and city councilors were in attendance, along with a Senator. The money raised during the event went directly to benefit the programs of the ranch, and included the purchase of beds for the dogs, and cat condos. -Adoptathons were held throughout the year in cooperation with animal shelters from across the state. For the 4 major events held throughout the year, an average of 200 animals per event were adopted. During these events any animals that remained with the high kill shelters were transferred to the ranch at the conclusion of the event. WMR also partnered with rescues and transferred animals prior to the start of the event to give them another chance at life.”

This statement holds true for the hundreds of dogs and cats that are rescued and placed into loving homes each year. Watermelon Mountain Ranch places 100% of the animals that are surrendered or brought in as rescues to our facility. Each month, up to 200 animals are placed into temporary foster homes until qualified permanent homes are found for them. Our volunteer foster families work tireless hours feeding and caring for these abandoned animals until they are socialized and ready for adoption.Mobile Adoption ProgramVolunteers transport our animals into the community in an effort to help make it easier for potential owners to meet and adopt our available cats and dogs. We hold mobile adoptions at several local retail locations. We also participate in many local adoption events.Humane Education ProgramThe Watermelon Mountain Ranch Educational staff recognizes the need to provide teachers with a hands-on, ready-to-use curriculum guide, which will not only promote both humane education and the "Character Counts" program, but will do so while enhancing academic skills. Using this approach, the varied activities in our curriculum guides can be easily worked into lesson plans. Because of irresponsible or uneducated pet owners, thousands of dogs and cats are killed or euthanized in New Mexico each year. Only through education can we change society's behavior and attitude toward pets.Spay and Neuter Clinic for Rescued AnimalsOur spay and neuter clinic, which was in the planning stage for so long, has become a reality. At Watermelon Mountain Ranch, we believe in educating the public about responsible pet ownership. Spay/neuter programs are essential in stemming the tide of unwanted pets and unnecessary euthanasia. All animals that are adopted out from Watermelon Mountain Ranch have been sterilized, in addition to receiving all age-appropriate vaccinations and a microchip.Don's Angel Fund for Injured AnimalsDon Johnson was a beloved Animal Control Officer in Sandoval County who dedicated his life to the animals. Don was tragically killed in an automobile accident on the night of his retirement party, after working as an animal control officer for twelve years. In his memory, we have started Don's Angel Fund, which helps provide medical care for sick or injured animals that are brought To the Ranch.Childrens Special Needs ProgramEach week, a group of children with physical or development challenges visit Watermelon Mountain Ranch and interact with the animals. The children experience the joy of being around the animals and the unconditional love that each has to give. The kids also help out with special projects around the Ranch. They're learning valuable lessons in responsible animal care andHaving fun too.Community Service and Information Programs In addition to the programs described above, we currently offer a free lost and found service, where we help owners get the word out about a lost pet. In early 2014 Mary Knight left Watermelon Ranch due to health concerns. After a promotion to interim Executive Director, Sara Garrigan was promoted to Executive Director in the spring. Sophia DiClemente as the President and Founder focuses on fundraising and estate planning. Improvements to Watermelon Mountain Ranch continued into 2014: -Expansion of the ranch to include Gunther's Village. This village included 5 new casitas to the ranch and increased overall capacity. -In November 2014, in cooperation with Petsmart Charities, Watermelon Mountain Ranch opened a brand new Everyday Adoption Center in the Petsmart on Eubank and I40. This location has the ability to hold an additional 15 dogs and 8 cats. This location helps to strengthen the bond with Albuquerque Animal Welfare. There are also several major projects that are on the horizon and are slated to begin in the next several months: -Adding barricades in between the kennel runs at the large dog cottage. This is to decrease "fence fighting" as well as decrease the transmission of disease between the runs. -The full enclosing of the lower kennels. This is to help control the heating and cooling of the lower kennel areas. This will also provide a measure of security for the dogs that are held in these kennels. -Enclosing the entire ranch with a chain link fence. Perimeter fencing would help to ensure dogs are not able to escape onto the mesa. The added fencing would also protect the assets of Watermelon Mountain Ranch more effectively. -Create/Build new offsite adoption kennels. New kennels are needed for the mega adoption events that are held 6 times a year. These kennels will be instrumental in the dogs comfort during these events. -A separate cat intake room for cats that are new to the facility. This will also make space for a quarantine area. -Increase of adoptions through public awareness and off site events. The Albuquerque metro area is not fully aware of the ranch and more public awareness is vital to the growth/survival of the ranch. Quality offsite locations are needed to give the animals more exposure and better chances of getting into a good home. Special Events: -In 2014 Watermelon Mountain Ranch Animal Center, participated in the 1st Annual Color Dash. This fun run 5k was directly benefitting the programs of WMR. Nearly 1000 people can out and participated in this 5k. The event was so successful that plans were made to hold the 2nd Annual race in April of 2015. -Fur Ball 2014 was held at the Marriott Pyramid and had an attendance of nearly 400 people. The theme for the year was "Bright Future" and tied in with an 80s style. The mayor of Rio Rancho and city councilors were in attendance, along with a Senator. The money raised during the event went directly to benefit the programs of the ranch, and included the purchase of beds for the dogs, and cat condos. -Adoptathons were held throughout the year in cooperation with animal shelters from across the state. For the 4 major events held throughout the year, an average of 200 animals per event were adopted. During these events any animals that remained with the high kill shelters were transferred to the ranch at the conclusion of the event. WMR also partnered with rescues and transferred animals prior to the start of the event to give them another chance at life. |
