| IRS990/Desc | 0 | INTRODUCTION ROC Action continued our One Fair Wage campaign for Michigan, focused on raising the minimum wage eliminating the subminimum wage for tipped workers, and in Mississippi the focus was on paid sick time. The information below provides a brief overview of public education mobilization in relation with our programs accomplishments. NARRATIVE SHIFT A major lesson from our work is the effectiveness of using narrative shift strategies to turn resistance into opportunities to build power for our movement. First, because of our ROC-Michigan projects work, the abusive aspects of tipping are part of public debate in a way they have never been before. This helped us bring out more workers, employers, diners to join our One Fair Wage campaign to pressure the industry to embrace change. With the anti-democratic challenges in Michigan, we are seeing another wave of public disgust at opposition efforts to preserve the subminimum wage for tipped workers. As we have worked to overcome the restaurant lobby opposition to our work, mobilizing Michiganders has been crucial. |
