Deep Heart uses the performance and visual arts, alongside outreach services, to prevent suicide and violent incidents, reduce recidivism, educate, rehabilitate, and spark personal transformation among the incarcerated community and at-risk populations. Programs include producing transformative entertainment-such as live inspirational events, films, and a magazine-delivered directly into correctional facilities, shelters, detention centers, and crisis-affected communities. These core programs are supported by meal, aid, and correspondence services that offer physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual support to incarcerated individuals and their families, as well as to the homeless, recently released individuals, families living in poverty, and unhoused veterans.
Deep Heart uses performance and visual art to inspire hope and personal transformation among underserved and at-risk audiences in correctional facilities, juvenile detention centers, schools, and minority communities around the world. We use our mobile theater show, artistic magazine, and films to provide a therapeutic and cathartic experience for all those suffering in difficult circumstances. We support these programs with aid and correspondence services, providing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual support to those incarcerated and their families, as well as to the homeless, those recently released from incarceration, families in poverty, and homeless vets.

| The Deep Heart Experience is our primary program and is a live show of music, dance, magic, comedy, motivational speaking, therapeutic theater, and the visual arts performed nationally and internationally in underserved communities. Our goal is to use the transformative power of the performing arts to inspire hope, combat mental atrophy, activate the untapped potential in marginalized individuals, educate, and provide creative therapy conducive to catharsis and rehabilitation for those incarcerated or recovering from homelessness, addiction, or trauma of any kind. The Deep Heart Experience is made possible by the donation, from our board members and volunteers, of approx. $120,000 (annually) in professional services, including public relations, production, artistic services/skills, audio/video/stage setup, transportation, event planning, and other program service needs. Annual totals for 2023 are as follows: 91 events performed in 62 different venues/facilities over 569 total show hours directly impacting approx. 18,800 audience members, not including family members and facility staff, in CA, OR, WA, IN, IL, UT, CO, OH, KS, AL, GA, TN, SC, OK, and NM in the USA, and Sao Paulo, Brazil abroad. Prior years' totals: In 2022, despite difficulties with lingering pandemic restrictions on in-person events during the first quarter, Deep Heart realized 76 events for a total of 426 show hours, in impoverished communities, shelters, schools, and correctional facilities in both Brazil and the USA. Even with Covid regulations reducing the number of people allowed to congregate in these venues, Deep Heart's shows impacted an estimated 27,500+ audience members directly, not accounting for the indirect positive impact on facility staff, and participants' friends and family members. Covid restrictions were lifted in some states in 2021, allowing Deep Heart to tour and perform in Florida, Louisiana, Arizona, Colorado, and Ohio. Deep Heart's crew put on approximately 40 shows for an estimated 12,000-15,000 audience members in 2021 and provided much-needed respite and inspiration for those incarcerated, their families, and many at-risk and low-income individuals. In February of 2020, the Deep Heart crew had just begun performances in Brazil (11 shows, in 5 correctional facilities and 4 public venues, reaching approximately 5,000 audience members) when the pandemic struck, canceling both that International Tour and the US 2020 tour. And in 2019, the year we were founded, Deep Heart performed in over 70 different venues, reaching an estimated 70,000 audience members, in the US and abroad. | $0 | $48,329 |
| Deep Heart UNBOUND is our full-color 28+ page magazine created specifically to provide mental, emotional, and spiritual support and guidance to the incarcerated population, their families, and those suffering in isolation or tragic circumstances. Unbound Magazine combines graphic and photographic art with a variety of articles, stories, quotes, and letters written to combat mental atrophy, educate on relevant topics, stimulate creative and critical thinking, encourage discourse, inspire positive personal development, and productively fill the often endless hours that those incarcerated face. The creation, production, and distribution of UNBOUND are made possible by the donation of an estimated $75,000 in professional services, including graphic design, digital interface design, content creation, public relations, and project management services, as well as through the contributions of advertisers offering services to the incarcerated population. Deep Heart also receives donations of shipping and packing materials from local businesses, including Walmart and Home Depot, with an estimated value of $3,000. In 2023 Deep Heart published the 2nd Edition of Unbound, printing and distributing 35,000 physical copies to correctional facilities nationwide. And thanks to our continued relationship with Edovo, along with other correctional-system digital platforms, Unbound is now directly available, at no charge, as educational reading material to over 1.2 million men and women incarcerated through their facility tablets, in jails, prisons, and detention centers in nearly every state. Beginning in September of 2020 through December of 2022, Deep Heart donated and shipped over 38,000 hard copies of the 1st Edition of UNBOUND to multiple correctional facilities in each of the fifty states for a total of over 260 DOC and BOP facilities. UNBOUND has also been mailed directly to approx. 2,200 individual inmates and their family members. Unbound continues to be highly valued by those incarcerated, their families, spiritual leaders, social workers, therapists, and correctional facility staff and administration as a cutting-edge mental health resource. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with statements like "instant sensation", "exactly what we needed", "we can't thank you enough!", "never seen anything like it", "our population is engrossed in UNBOUND", as well as "We'll take as many copies as you can send", proving the value of this program. The 3rd Edition is estimated to go to press in the Fall/Winter of 2024. UNBOUND is available on Deep Heart's website with hard copies by request through email. | $0 | $43,670 |
| Deep Heart's Outreach programs provide material, emotional, and spiritual support to individuals who are incarcerated, homeless, or otherwise in need, and have participated in one of our other programs, reached out to request assistance, or otherwise personally encountered our crew. Deep Heart's volunteers correspond with inmates, providing practical counseling and a listening ear, send special occasion cards, as well as help inmates with tasks such as contacting family members, sending reading materials, making small deposits into inmate's commissary accounts to purchase basic hygienic necessities and clothing, among other things. Deep Heart's volunteers also distribute meals and aid packages to the homeless, seniors, and those recently released from incarceration, in the locales in which they perform. In 2023 we provided care and holiday packages for over 950 individuals, corresponded with approx. 3,300 men and women incarcerated, and provided food/snacks at 12 special events inside correctional facilities. In 2022, in addition to the previously mentioned services and outreach, Deep Heart hosted a 4th of July Picnic inside a FL DOC correctional facility, contributed food for inmates at many events behind bars, distributed Christmas gifts and food on Skid Row, and provided children's books (written and illustrated by Deep Heart staff) directly to prison libraries and to other charitable organizations, for use in connecting inmates with their children. In 2021 Deep Heart's volunteers corresponded with approximately 3,000 inmates and materially aided an estimated 800 individuals, both incarcerated and otherwise, donating over 800 hours annually, a value of $20,320 according to the OR estimated volunteer rate. This program provides a human touch of kindness to those suffering from isolation, and the countless testimonials from inmates saying "I don't know what I'd do without you guys", "I've got no one on the outside to write to", "You keep me sane", "You became my family while I'm in here"...testify to the invaluable lifeline that is Deep Heart Outreach | $0 | $26,226 |
| Deep Heart's films, the first of which was 'Rise from Rubble' released in June, 2021, are virtual experiences of the Deep Heart performing arts show combined with cinematic inspirational videos created specifically as rehabilitative content for inter-correctional facility programming. The films include acts from Deep Heart's performances, all with cultural, educational and inspirational themes, along with personal stories and messages shared by Deep Heart's crew members, providing prison administrators with a valuable tool in therapeutic entertainment. Over the course of the year, Deep Heart donated over 2000 DVD's and countless digital files/USB chips to facilities nationwide for special events, activity nights, and broadcast on institutional CCTV. The films are in use statewide in California, Kansas, Arizona, and Texas, on prison facility channels, as well as in Nebraska, Ohio, Florida, and Missouri, among others. Rise from Rubble and the Deep Heart Christmas special are also available digitally on JPay and Endovo for inmates to view personally on their tablets. To meet the overwhelming demand for this kind of programming, the Deep Heart crew is currently working on production of a third film, slated for release late fall 2024. Deep Heart expanded this program in 2022 by translating 'Rise from Rubble' into Portuguese and adapting the content to Brazilian culture. The film was quickly adopted as a valuable resource inside Brazilian correctional facilities, with some states offering inmates a sentence reduction in exchange for participating in a multi-week program that involved watching 'Rise from Rubble', discussing the themes and personal application, filling out questionnaires, and recreating theater acts from the film inside the prison. The Deep Heart Christmas Special was received by even more facilities in 2022-2023, including all Nevada DOC facilities. The feedback from inmates to both films has been overwhelmingly positive and staff have communicated immense gratitude for this resource that helps them make the holiday's a little bit brighter for the incarcerated population and their families. Films are available on Deep Heart's website for download, as well as in various digital formats upon request by email. | $0 | $21,184 |
