Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Point foundation empowers promising lgbtq students to achieve their full academic and leadership potential - despite the obstacles often put before them - to make a significant impact on society.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Leadership conferences & training:the year began with the 2012 scholar & alumni leadership conference held in washington, dc on july 19-22. The conference was attended by over 160 participants, including 68 scholars, 42 alumni, 32 regents & trustees, and 16 staff. Moving the conference to our nation's capital allowed attendees an up close and personal look at u.s. Government through a briefing with white house staff on lgbtq issues, and a private after-hours tour of the u.s. Capitol. The conference agenda also boasted an impressive list of guest speakers, along with the opportunity to participate in workshops and panel discussions focused on topics important to the organization's mission: the lgbtq legislative agenda, lgbtq leadership & diversity, hiv/aids, building a personal brand, and an examination of media coverage of the 2012 presidential election. Additional activities included the point leadership dinner and attending a performance of the groundbreaking play "the normal heart". Following the performance, tony award-winning actress and point board director judith light led a talkback session with attendees focused on the questions about hiv and aids in the 1980's that the play dealt with. Finally, the unstructured time outside of sessions and activities allowed scholars, distinguished speakers, alumni, regents and staff to network and discuss what best exemplifies the qualities of leadership.to further sustain the leadership component half way through the fiscal year point held regional leadership forums (rlfs) in six of the point trustee regions: boston, chicago, los angeles, new york city, san francisco, and washington, dc. The rlf's were informal gatherings of point scholars, alumni, regents, mentors and staff built around a group meal and speaker. While programming varied in each city, all the rlfs focused on mentoring and community building exercises.
Activity 3
Scholar selections: while current scholars worked their way through the academic year, point went about the business of selecting scholars for the next academic year. As part of its drive to further diversify future classes of point scholars, point continued with an outreach plan specifically targeting underrepresented groups in the lgbtq community (e.g. Women; students of color; transgender and gender nonconforming students; and applicants with disabilities). Point also increased outreach efforts to geographic areas that are not well represented in point's scholarship applicant pool. These outreach efforts resulted in point achieving the highest percentage of new scholars who identify as persons of color with 50% of the new class hailing from rural communities, while also maintaining the high gender diversity of years past.after a year of testing, point implemented a new scholarship application. 2,176 scholarship applications were completed and submitted to point for the 2013/14 academic year. After an intensive review process, the pool was narrowed down to 622 semifinalists. After further evaluation, 38 finalists were brought to san francisco for a finalist celebration dinner and final interviews. 26 new scholars were selected to join 52 continuing scholars for the 2013/14 academic year.

IRS990/Activity3/Description0SCHOLAR SELECTIONS: WHILE CURRENT SCHOLARS WORKED THEIR WAY THROUGH THE ACADEMIC YEAR, POINT WENT ABOUT THE BUSINESS OF SELECTING SCHOLARS FOR THE NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR.

ADDITIONALLY, FIVE CONTINUING SCHOLARS WERE MATCHED WITH NEW MENTORS BECAUSE THEIR PREVIOUS MENTOR HAD BECOME UNABLE TO CONTINUE SERVING DUE TO WORK COMMITMENTS, RELOCATIONS, ETC. TRAINING AND SUPPORT FOR MENTORS WAS PROVIDED BY WAY OF TWO OPEN FORUMS ONE IN THE FALL AND ONE IN THE SPRING WHEREBY MENTORS ACROSS THE NATION CONVENED VIA CONFERENCE CALL TO DISCUSS BEST PRACTICES AND SEEK ADVICE FROM EACH OTHER ON ANY SPECIFIC SITUATION THEY MAY BE EXPERIENCING WITH THEIR SCHOLAR. STAFF ALSO CONDUCTED CHECK-IN CALLS AND DISTRIBUTED TWO EDITIONS OF "MENTORING MESSENGER", A NEWSLETTER FOR POINT'S MENTOR-SCHOLAR PAIRS. TO FURTHER EXPAND THEIR NETWORK WITHIN POINT FOUNDATION, ALL POINT MENTORS WERE INVITED TO ATTEND THE ABOVE MENTIONED RLFS WITH THEIR MENTEE. LASTLY, AS A REQUIREMENT OF THEIR SCHOLARSHIP AWARD AGREEMENT, ALL SCHOLARS INVOLVED THEIR RESPECTIVE MENTORS IN THE PLANNING AND EXECUTION OF THEIR ANNUAL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT.SCHOLAR INTERNSHIPS: TO FURTHER ENHANCE THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY AND "GIVING BACK," POINT FOUNDATION COLLABORATED WITH A FUNDING FOUNDATION TO OFFER A SUPERVISED LGBT NONPROFIT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM. SCHOLARS SUBMITTED PROPOSALS TO A SUBCOMMITTEE OF POINT'S BOARD, TO BE AWARDED A TEN-WEEK PAID WORK EXPERIENCE IN THE NOT-FOR-PROFIT LGBTQ SECTOR. EIGHT SCHOLARS APPLIED FOR ONE OF THREE INTERNSHIPS THAT WERE EVENTUALLY AWARDED BY THE SUBCOMMITTEE. IN AUGUST, INTERNSHIPS AT GREEN CHIMNEYS NEW YORK, HETRICK-MARTIN INSTITUTE AND SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER INTERNSHIPS WERE COMPLETED. IN JUNE, THREE NEW INTERNSHIPS WERE AWARDED TO SCHOLARS TO WORK AT GREEN CHIMNEYS NEW YORK, THE JUVENILE JUSTICE PROJECT OF LOUISIANA AND QUEER LIFESPACE.
