Powerhouse expansion - The Discovery Museum completed the Phase 1 development of the historic 1893 Durango Power Plant, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This previously blighted downtown riverfront property had hazardous waste and access issues and had been vacant for 27 years despite efforts to sell it to developers. Clean up, remediation, and restoration of the Power Plant to its original condition were completed. Planned initiatives for the site include public exhibits, a public square, river and trail access, a caf and museum shop, science and nature interpretive programs and new energy education labs. The site will reconnect the city's historic retail district with the riverfront and the Animas River Trail. In October of 2010 Discovery Museum took occupancy of the adjacent and completely remodeled Carlton Science and Education Center on the Powerhouse premises. On February 23, 2011 Discovery Museum completed all site improvements and the parking lots and took occupancy of Phase I of the Powerhouse Museum build out which was opened to the public. Completion of the entire project is expected in 2014.
