Activity 2

Flying for freshwater: flights help people see the connections between river systems and watersheds and how the health of their watershed affects them personally, which is critical since people have divergent opinions about how to balance resource use and resource conservation. Flight is one of the few tools that allows people to truly understand a river system from headwaters to delta and provides access to areas that cannot be reached on the ground because of size, topography or property ownership. Lighthawk's work for freshwater protection was honored with the award of an rbc blue water project leadership grant in 2011.

Activity 3

Flying for oceans: lighthawk flights provide a unique view of the coastlines of north and central america. We fly with dozens of partners in four countries to protect the mesoamerican barrier reef, the world's second largest coral reef. On the pacific coast we've been instrumental in california's marine protected areas process, we document the interaction of land and water in washington's puget sound and help protect the reefs of baja california, mexico. Our work in the northeast includes protecting islands off the coast of maine, documenting pollution flowing into chesapeake bay and supporting coastal restoration in cape cod and narragansett bay. On the gulf coast, our flights inform louisiana's wetlands restoration, research mexico's shark populations and assist oil spill and hurricane damage recovery.
