Activity 2

Zoo ImprovementsZoo Improvements includes both small capital and large capital construction projects. The largest component of the expense is $2,359,656 for construction expenditures related to Toyota Elephant Passage. Although the assets of the more than $50Million project were turned over to the City in 2012, there remain some expenses related to the completion of the projects within the Millennium plan. Approximately $1,272,000 was spent on small capital purchases related to general zoo improvements, exhibit enhancements and capital equipment. Over $353,000 was spent to renovate the former elephant building in order to accommodate rhinoceros.

Activity 3

Environmental/Conservation Education ProgrammingEducation is a major focus for Denver Zoo, with a variety of programs available for diverse audiences, both at the Zoo and at schools and other locations throughout the Denver metro area. The Zoo reaches out to diverse audiences, especially underserved populations that historically have not participated in programs offered by scientific and cultural facilities. We have strategically sought collaborations with partners that have earned the trust of underrepresented audiences. In 2012, approximately 50,000 students participated in on-site classes, assemblies, science workshops, career programs, our popular Bunk with the Beasts program, Summer Safari (a day camp) and other programs. This number does not include students who visited the Zoo on field trips. More than 68,000 children and adults participated in education outreach programming, primarily Pre-K through 12th grade students
