Education and Volunteer ProgramsEducation is a major focus for Denver Zoo, with a variety of programs available for diverse audiences, both at the zoo and at schools and other locations throughout the Denver metro area. The zoo reaches out to diverse audiences, especially underserved populations that historically have not participated in programs offered by scientific and cultural facilities. We have strategically sought collaborations with partners that have earned the trust of underrepresented audiences. In 2010, over 53,000 students participated in on-site classes, assemblies, science workshops, career programs, our popular Bunk with the Beasts program, Summer Safari (a day camp) and other programs. This number does not include students who visited the zoo on field trips. Nearly 85,000 children and adults participated in education outreach programming, primarily Pre-K through 12th grade students. In 2010, 714 volunteers gave 80,034 hours of their time to Denver Zoo - an average of 144 hours per person. Volunteers dedicated their time to enhancing the visitor experience, supporting staff, helping to care for animals, providing education programs in schools, community centers and Senior Centers, helping to foster empathy for animals, and conservation.
