Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The purpose of Helping Oppressed People Everywhere is to reach out to disadvantaged children and families wherever they are and show genuine love and care by providing essential needs and sustainable interventions.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
In South Africa, HOPE works through a local partner NGO to directly meet both short- and long-term needs of underserved and impoverished children, families, and communities in the Ladysmith area of KwaZulu-Natal. In the summer of 2022, HOPE volunteers constructed, fenced, and planted five sustainable vegetable gardens for food-insecure families in the Matiwane township. Water tanks, tools for the maintenance of the gardens, and seeds for replanting were provided to each family. Volunteers also prepared and planted a large community garden on the grounds of Cwembe Primary School in Matiwane. A total of more than 4,200 seedlings and hundreds of seeds were planted in these six gardens that provided fresh produce to approximately 40 families. Volunteers also purchased and delivered groceries, hygiene items, and other household goods to families identified by the local partner NGO as having profound need. Funds were provided to the local partner organization for the ongoing care and maintenance of the community garden at Cwembe.--
In Romania, HOPE works through a local foundation-run school to provide services to Roma and other disadvantaged children and youth in the Ferentari district of Bucharest. The Roma are a highly stigmatized and marginalized ethnic group, and Ferentari is home to a large Roma population. Challenges facing Roma families and children include ethnic discrimination across all facets of society, low levels of parental education, income and food insecurity, high rates of poverty and functional illiteracy, elevated school dropout rates, and poor academic outcomes. Services provided include hot lunches for schoolchildren a health and hygiene program facilitated by the school nurse encompassing age-appropriate health and hygiene training, dental hygiene supplies for students, and access to feminine hygiene products an afterschool care program providing the most educationally, economically, and socially at-risk students with tutoring, homework assistance, and educational enrichment activities while extending the wage-earning hours of their caregivers and individualized social services focused on education retention and child and family advocacy. In 2022, 202 children in grades 0 through 8 benefitted from these programs. Following Russia?s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, HOPE and our partner organization in Romania launched an operation to house and care for Ukrainian refugees seeking refuge in Romania and requiring assistance from the Ukrainian embassy in Bucharest. An existing dormitory space was upgraded, expanded, and furnished to house refugees. The Center opened on March 1, 2022, and its capacity was expanded as facility upgrades were completed. More than 400 refugees, largely women and children, received safe housing and all necessary support services including hot meals, clothing, laundry facilities, transportation, assistance obtaining medical care, assistance obtaining and completing government documentation, and logistical and long-term planning support in 2022. The operation of the refugee center was fully funded by HOPE and continued caring for refugees into 2023.--
In June of 2022, HOPE conducted a weeklong Youth Sports Camp for middle school students in rural Wise County, Virginia targeted toward at-risk students from low-income families not otherwise able to afford summer enrichment activities. According to data published by the Virginia Department of Education, 60 of the student population of Wise County public schools in the fall of 2022 was identified as economically disadvantaged. HOPE partnered with International Sports Federation ISF, a fellow nonprofit organization, to conduct the camp. Experienced instructors taught students basic skills in karate, archery, pickleball, basketball, flag football, and track and field, along with lessons on sportsmanship and character. There was no cost to the students to attend, and 101 students participated. Breakfast, lunch, snacks, and drinks were provided.--
