Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Community Bots provide middle and high school girls in underserved communities in developing countries an opportunity to develop a passion for STEM-robotics and to succeed in their pursuit of a higher education. Our girls are empowered to enter the workplace and to engineer solutions for the worlds most pressing challenges.

The Community Bots provides training in STEM-robotics for middle school girls in underserved communities in New York City and around the world. We recognize that the ideal time to expose girls to the field of STEM-robotics is during their impressionable middle school years.

We traveled to La Línea de Concepción, Spain, partnering with the US Embassy Madrid, the Fundación Secretariado Gitano, and the mayor's office. We trained 12 teachers for one week and then ran our six-day STEM-robotics program for 30 girls, many from the Gitano (Roma) community as well as six girls from Ceuta, the Spanish autonomous city on the north coast of Africa. Following a lively SumoBot contest, the closing ceremony was marked by speeches from the US Ambassador, Duke Buchan, Mayor Juan Franco of La Línea de Concepción, and Isidro Rodriguez, National Director of la Fundación Secretariado Gitano. Ambassador Buchan stated that The Community Bots program "has been awesome, The Bomb!, as they say in Spain." We were fortunate to have been featured on Spain's 24h TVE news channel in which Ana Duque-Higgins, Cultural Attaché at the embassy, spoke of the program's importance of "bringing technology to young women and motivating them to develop their capacities in science, technology, and innovation in order to create more employment opportunities and economic prosperity." Altogether, the program received 1.5 million media hits!$0$12,398
We traveled to the Mandeville Primary School in Mandeville, Jamaica. The teachers really embraced the five-day training and accomplished so much. They were then ready to start the one-week student program for the 25 fourth and fifth grade girls. We even had a special surprise visit from a national Jamaican television station during the teacher graduation ceremony! The girls had a blast during our Fun with Robotics program, and they learned so much. The days were filled with design and programming challenges, amazing presentations about Jamaican women in the STEM field and about Jamaican companies engaged in STEM projects and products. During the final robotics challenge, the girls competed in a fun SumoBot competition in front of the school community. During the final ceremony and on national TV, the principal of the school, Mr. Howard Salmon, pledged to dedicate a new room at the school for the robotics program!$0$3,622
We traveled to Granada, Nicaragua to run our STEM-robotics program. After a rigorous teacher training, we began our student program at La Escuela Carlos Bravo working with 30 excited girls. The students learned how to design robots and to program them to turn, loop codes, and incorporate various sensors. The girls were able to put all of their skills to work by completing the maze challenges and the culminating SumoBots competition! After we returned back to the United States, the students and teachers we had trained at La Escuela Carlos Bravo began practicing six days a week in preparation for the national World Robot Olympiad held in mid September. All their time and determination paid off as they earned 2nd place in a field of 80 teams! An amazing accomplishment for a rookie squad and the first robotics team to represent the city of Granada.$0$2,345
