Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Assertive Kids is a community organization dedicated to fostering assertiveness and well-being in kids and adults. We seek to teach individuals to be assertive instead of passive or aggressive through workshops, literature, and web presence. Our programs will help bring awareness to the topic of ageism and aging. As assertive persons, we shall take part in sharing the responsibility for the well-being of our community by helping homeless to be kept warm and fed, and thus reduce their suffering in simple ways. We shall brighten our neighborhoods by providing flowers to homeowners, public housing residents,& businesses in our area. We seek to fund studies related to epigenetics as this relates to helping pregnant women receive better healthcare & have a better, healthier pregnancy,& helping individuals battling addiction, among other research topics. We shall use funds provided by the general public to provide for those less fortunate, and to help provide for a beautiful community

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
We have distributed, as of the date of this filing, approximately $70,000 of in-kind clothing donations to children in disadvantaged families. About $20,000 worth of clothing was donated in Fiscal Year 2019. Recipients have included: children of refugees, disabled parents, low income parents, parents affected by the pandemic with job loss or income reduction, as well as members of local Native American tribes. In Fiscal Year 2020, we have distributed close to $50,000 in clothing so far, as many members of the community provided us with in-kind donations for distribution. All of this was done by volunteers alone, sorting, cataloging, pricing, and distributing the clothing to local families, and all of this was accomplished with no direct monetary donations, from either individuals or businesses, and no non-profit organization grants.$70,000$0
In FY 2020, we distributed close to an additional $50,000 of clothing to disadvantaged children in the local area. Families that were assisted included many who had lost their jobs and source of income due to the pandemic, as well as families of disabled moms, low income families, and others who were in need of clothing for their children. All of the sorting, cataloging, photographing, and distributing was carried out by volunteers.$50,000$0
In FY2021, we took in many donations from the community, and many of the previously received donations were distributed in FY2022$687$0
Contributions listed in previous sections of the IRS Form 990EZ for FY 2019 were provided to the following families in Staten Island, New Jersey, and the surrounding areas: Dee's granddaughter, Kayla's daughter Iris's four children, Alisa's two children, Lornetta's five children, Kristy's three girls and one boy, Rachel's two daughters, Diana's daughter, Breanna's daughter, Donna's daughter, Jasmine's daughter and twin sons, Saide's daughter, Adrianna's three daughters and one son. Altogether, 30 children were helped. Out of these, 5 were in Mariner's Harbor, 12 were in New Brighton, 4 were in Arlington, 3 were in Elm Park, one was in Dongan Hills Projects, one was in New Jersey, 2 were in Brooklyn Projects, 1 was in a Queens Project, and 1 was in Manhattan. Several of the children helped were finally receiving a permanent home after leaving a shelter, and one of them was previously in foster care and being returned to her birth mom. The ethnicity of the children were as follows: 14 were Black/African American, 4 were White/Caucasian, 11 were Hispanic. In addition to these individual families, Assertive Kids also donated chocolate bars and candy, as well as a Tofurky Vegetarian Feast, to several local food banks and food pantries on Staten Island, including Project Hospitality, Salvation Army, and the Seventh Day Adventist Church. These all serve disadvantaged local communities with fresh food on a weekly or more frequent basis. The Salvation Army received the Tofurky very happily, as they have a vegetarian family that comes for their annual Thanksgiving Dinner, and in 2019 they had a real Thanksgiving feast with a turkey and all the trimmings.$0$0
We have completed two neighborhood litter cleanups in Port Richmond Center, in Staten Island, and at Clove Lakes park on Staten Island.$0$0
We have begun researching the purchasing of supplies for the homeless population, and will continue to purchase further supplies with the donations that are received. Each Homeless Care package has an approximate cost of $20, and ideally we would like to distribute care packages for at least 10 or more homeless people in the local community.$0$0
We have begun formulating the studies for pregnant populations. Participants have not yet been solicited as further contributions are necessary, and we will be working with a university to conduct the studies.$0$0
We are contributing our time to investigating the local damaged, protected ecosystem with federally protected species. This is being done by volunteers.$0$0
The non-profit director has contributed the creation of the website, along with graphics and articles on the website for informing the public of our mission. Costs for hosting the website, designing the website and promotional materials, and printing costs are estimated. Art direction and copywriting are part of this service. Additional revisions were made to the website in 2020 and 2021, in order to modernize the site and bring it up to date. Costs for this year's revisions are also estimated, and have not been billed. The expenses listed below in the program service expenses area have been deferred due to a lack of present funding. They will be billed at the rate noted when donations have been received.$0$0
