FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The organization is formed to develop, implement, and facilitate space- inspired art therapy programs, exhibits, and research. Uniting a planetary community of children through the awe and wonder of space exploration and the healing power of art.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Space for art grants three space for art grants were awarded in 2021 - as with all space for art foundation projects, all of these grants directly support the space for art mission to unite a planetary community of children through awe and wonder of space exploration and the healing power of art, integration of an understanding of the interconnectivity between personal health and planetary/environmental health, and in particular to support the professional growth of the art therapy work of students and small organizations through space-themed inspired art and wellness projects. 10,000 was awarded to the 501(c)(3) george washington university art therapy program in support of two graduate students' culminating projects, furthering their creative exploration of art therapy through incorporation of the intersection between science/space and art. 6,000 was awarded to your song my song, in support of the development, implementation, and extension of their existing programming to include space-themed, live performance, educational events. 5,000 was awarded to 501(c)(3) organization the people's conservatory (tpc) to further develop both their remote and in-person after school arts programs and to advance tpc's objectives of utilizing the arts to support community health.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Inspiration4 (i4) mission project - the space for art foundation implemented an art and wellness program in support of the i4 crew's mission to raise awareness of pediatric cancer and funding for treatment of children at st jude children's hospital. Modeled after the conccept behind the space for art foundation's spacesuit art project work, flight jackets were custom designed from st jude children's artwork for each of the four i4 crewmembers. These jackets flew to space with the crew, were shared from space with the children and their families via video downlink from the spacex capsule, and after flight were auctioned by and for st jude's benefit(raising 90,000). The most important part of this project was the direct support of the children in treatment at the hospital and to help them feel like they were part of the i4 crew. The space for art foundation created custom-designed mission tote bags that provided them not only with space mission-related materials, but with the opportunity to create their own artwork directly on the bag that was inspired by the i4 mission and crew. The space for art foundation donated 500 of these mission tote bags to the children at the hospital.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Beyond art spacesuit creation and cop26 display - the work of the space for art foundation started in 2016 with the creation of our first art spacesuit named hope, which was built from the artwork made by children in one houston, tx pediatric center and through the volunteer support of spacesuit company ilc dover. As a result the 501(c)(3) was formed in 2018 and along the way four more art spacesuits have been created with children in hospitals, refugee centers, and orphanages around the world, including the 2021 art spacesuit beyond. Beyond was created as the ambassador for spaceship earth to remind us of the interconnectivity between personal and planetary/environmental health and of our role as crewmates here on our planetary spaceship. The bulk of artwork for beyond was collected during the height of the pandemic by email and phone calls to participants in our previous projects and to our network of friends around the world, and finding ways to virtually engage with the children versus in-person art activities. As any ambassador for spaceship earth should do, beyond represents our planetary community through inclusion of artwork from at least one child in every country on the planet. As such a beautiful ambassador, beyond and the space for art foundation were asked to participate at the un climate change conference (cop26) in nov 2021 in glasgow, scotland. The first of what we intend to be many ways of sharing beyond with the children who participated from around the world and beyond's messaging with as many people as possible.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4D

Mosi exhibit documentation - a space for art exhibit was held at the museum of science and industry (mosi) in tampa, fl from june 2020 - feb 2021. In order to document and share the experience with the children and organizations around the world who participate in our projects, an imagery scan of the exhibit was captured in order to create a 3d electronic model that can be used as an online virtual tour of the exhibit. Aim higher art installation - the space for art foundation collected artwork from children in treatment in three pediatric hospitals in atlanta in support of a large scale space-themed art project installation. The space for art foundation also faciliatated the donation of all necessary art supplies for the children's art from the educational team at crayola.

THE SPACE FOR ART FOUNDATION ESTABLISHED THIS GRANT WITH GWU AS A MERIT- BASED STIPEND, TO BE KNOWN AS THE "SPACE FOR ART FOUNDATION AWARD," FOR TWO GRADUATE STUDENTS (5,000 EACH) WHO ARE UNDERTAKING AN ART THERAPY PROJECT AS PART OF THEIR ONGOING STUDIES THIS ACADEMIC YEAR (2021-2022) IN THE ART THERAPY PROGRAM. THE STIPEND HAS BEEN AWARDED TO TWO STUDENTS AT THE DISCRETION OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE ART THERAPY PROGRAM IN THE COLUMBIAN COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES (CCAS) AND IN CONSULTATION WITH THE DEAN OF CCAS. OUR SPACE FOR ART FOUNDATION POINT OF CONTACT, MARIA LANAS, HAS HELPED GWU DEVELOP THE OVERALL PROGRAM AND WILL MANAGE THE GRANT WITH GWU AND REPORTING BACK TO THE SPACE FOR ART FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS. MARIA LANAS AND THE DIRECTOR OF THE ART THERAPY PROGRAM HAVE AGREED THAT WHEN THE STUDENT PROJECTS ARE COMPLETED, THEY WILL BE DISPLAYED IN SOME CAPACITY AS PART OF THE PROGRAM'S ONGOING WORK.
