“The following research initiative projects also span oref's media and education & engagement initiatives: the blue planet (the giant screen): an educational nature documentary giant-screen film produced by bbc earth, giant screen films and oceanx media that takes audiences on a global exploration of the sea to discover the largest and least explored habitat on earth. Using new science and technology, the film highlights scientific research of the oceans, and advocates for the protection of the oceans, their creatures and the people who depend on them. The film can be seen in theatres, science centers and museums globally, and has screened in over 40 places around the world since its release. One big wave: the one big wave is an initiative of the organization, launched in 2018, that aims to bring together philanthropic and other organizations to collaborate on the scientific exploration, documentation, advocacy, protection and stewardship of the oceans. Initial activities of the one big wave collaborative in 2018 have involved exploration of the northeast canyons and seamounts marine national monument off of the coast of new england ("national marine monuments", the only u.s. National marine monument. Oref and its partners shared that documentation with world leaders, ngos and others in support of a greater understanding and protection of the oceans, including this national marine monument. Television series: oref is collaborating with scientific and media organizations to create a six-episode series with ancillary educational and other outreach activities focused on the scientific exploration of the ocean and the scientists who engage on such exploration, with the aim of engaging audiences globally on the importance of understanding and protecting the oceans. This aligns with the organization's mission of documenting and exploring the oceans with compelling educational narratives that encourage and inspire people to seek a greater understanding of the oceans and to protect them, and the global communities that rely on them for their sustenance. Oceanx media: oceanx media is the nonprofit media arm of the organization that collaborates with leading scientific, media and education organizations to create, produce and distribute educational media focusing on scientific research and exploration of the earth's oceans with the aim of engaging global audiences on the importance of ocean exploration and protection. Oref acquired oceanx media in 2019. National monuments mission: scientific expedition that enabled the exploration and scientific research of the northeast canyons and seamounts marine national monument ocean canyons off of the coast of new england ("national marine monuments"), development of media documenting this exploration and associated research that advances public understanding of the national marine monuments, and distribution of social media aimed at engaging and educating the public about the importance of ocean exploration and research. This mission began in 2018 and continued into 2019. Oceanxplorer: a world class scientific research vessel and package of equipment that enables the exploration, scientific research and documentation of the oceans. Oref acquired the oceanxplorer vessel through a donation of gms limited, a foreign disregarded entity. The vessel was refitted in rotterdam and is expected to be placed in service in november 2020. The ship was built to enable scientific research into heretofore unexplored areas of the oceans, to document that exploration and the scientific discoveries from such exploration and to distribute educational media and other documentation aimed at inspiring populations globally to better understand and protect the oceans.”
