Form 990, Part I, Line 1, Description of Organization Mission:

“To advance the preservation of the Amazon rainforest and conservation research and to disseminate knowledge regarding the impact of human development and climate change on the diversity of the ecosystem, wildlife, and plant life of the Amazon. Founded as the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragmentation Project in 1979 by Dr. Thomas E. Lovejoy, the Amazon Biodiversity Center seeks to protect the biodiversity of the Amazon Basin by bridging the gap between conservation science and land management policy. Scientists on our reserve near Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil study Amazon Rainforest wildlife and ecosystems and the effects of human development and climate change on them. The project brings together scientists, decision makers, land managers from Brazil and worldwide to show first hand the need to manage the Amazon in a holistic way -- thinking across borders and land uses -- if we are to preserve this fragile and critical ecosystem. The Amazon Biodiversity Center is a 501(c)(3) public charity that works in cooperation with Brazil's National Institute for Amazon Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazonia; INPA).”

“The Board Designated Endowment is to be used for future operations of the BDFFP. The principal of the fund is intended to be held in perpetuity with the revenue from the fund to be used for operation and BDFFP program ABC. At the discretion of the board, principal may be expended. The intention is that principal is to be used in emergency situations and be limited to no more than 20% of net assets.”

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0To advance the preservation of the Amazon rainforest and conservation research and to disseminate knowledge regarding the impact of human development and climate change on the diversity of the ecosystem, wildlife, and plant life of the Amazon. Founded as the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragmentation Project in 1979 by Dr. Thomas E. Lovejoy, the Amazon Biodiversity Center seeks to protect the biodiversity of the Amazon Basin by bridging the gap between conservation science and land management policy. Scientists on our reserve near Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil study Amazon Rainforest wildlife and ecosystems and the effects of human development and climate change on them. The project brings together scientists, decision makers, land managers from Brazil and worldwide to show first hand the need to manage the Amazon in a holistic way -- thinking across borders and land uses -- if we are to preserve this fragile and critical ecosystem. The Amazon Biodiversity Center is a 501(c)(3) public charity that works in cooperation with Brazil's National Institute for Amazon Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazonia; INPA).
