Mission and Program Overview

Mission

We're on a mission to improve data use in the social sector by connecting capacity with need for a thriving equitable social data ecosystem. We do this primarily through 2 programs: Our signature program which historically has included mostly graduate students participating in a summer Externship cohort experience - including 1:1 and cohort seminars and mental/emotional wellness supports - in which part- or full-time externs are matched with host social sector organizations to complete a research/data project, and community mentors with whom the extern has a shared lived experience to provide professional mentorship and relationship building; and Austin's Community-Engaged Research Course primarily for undergraduate Scholars of the Global Majority (i.e., BIPOC scholars), designed and led in partnership with MEASURE, Huston-Tillotson University (Austin's HBCU and oldest institution of higher learning), and now Texas State University (a Hispanic Serving Institution).

Summer Externship: matched 6 host organizations with 5 part-time and 1 full-time externs who completed a total of 1,120 research and data project hours for their host projects, and 120 professional development hours. For the 5 host organizations led by People of the Global Majority (i.e., BIPOC leaders), we contributed $19,000 of the $19,500 total stipends for their externs. Externships ran for 10 weeks from July, 2021 - September, 2021.$1,000$20,145
CERC: In 2021 we hosted the Community-Engaged Research Course at Huston-Tillotson University in Spring (15 weeks Jan-May) and Texas State University in Fall (14 weeks Aug-Dec), serving a total of 8 nonprofit partners and 18 undergraduate students who completed a total of 1,080 research and data hours for their nonprofit partner research projects and 432 professional development hours, including coursework.$5,100$3,000
Social Justice Informatics Faculty Fellowship: In 2021, we also partnered with The University of Texas at Austin, Huston-Tillotson University, and MEASURE to co-host this faculty fellowship at UT-Austin. In total, 35 organizing and participating institutional-, City-, and nonprofit-based faculty fellows participated in 14 weekly seminars and design teams leading to over 500 research, data, and professional development hours focused on how researchers can support City and nonprofit projects through data use.$0$0
