Governance Explanations

Officer directors etc family relationship Part VI line 2

The Foundations President, Dawn Nickel, and the Secretary, Taryn Strong, have a family relationship.

Form 990 governing body review Part VI line 11

The organizations Vice President and Executive Director/CEO thoroughly reviewed the Form 990 and discussed it with the preparer CPA. Each page of the return was discussed, specifically aimed at understanding the purpose and potential regulatory issues. Following that review, a complete copy of the Form 990 was provided to the organizations board of directors. At a board meeting, the CPA provided a high-level overview and addressed any questions or concerns. Any potential changes were thoroughly discussed and resolved before filing the return.

Conflict of interest policy compliance Part VI line 12C

All Foundation officers, directors, board committee members and employees are covered under the Conflict of Interest Policy. Under the policy, any Foundation officer, director, Board committee member or employee who has a direct or indirect financial interest, as defined in the policy, is an interested person. In connection with any actual or possible conflict of interest, an interested person must disclose the existence of the financial interest and all material facts to the Board. Any interested director must recuse himself or herself at any time from involvement in any decision or discussion in which he or she has or may have a conflict of interest, without going through the process for determining whether such a conflict of interest exists. After disclosure of the financial interest and all material facts, and after any discussion with the interested person(s), he/she shall leave the Board meeting while the determination of a conflict of interest is discussed and voted upon. The procedures for addressing the conflict of interest include: (a) A presentation at the Board meeting, then abstaining from a discussion or vote on the transaction or arrangement; (b) If appropriate, the President shall appoint a disinterested person or committee to investigate alternatives to the proposed transaction or arrangement; (c) After exercising due diligence, the Board shall determine whether the Foundation can obtain with reasonable efforts a more advantageous transaction or arrangement from a person or entity that would not give rise to a conflict of interest; (d) If a more advantageous transaction or arrangement is not reasonably possible, the Board shall determine by a majority vote of the disinterested directors whether the transaction or arrangement is in the Foundations best interest, for its own benefit, and whether it is fair and reasonable. Each officer, director, Board committee member and employee shall annually complete and sign a Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statement. If the Board has reasonable cause to believe a person has failed to disclose actual or possible conflicts of interest, it shall inform such person of the basis for such belief and afford the person an opportunity to explain the alleged failure to disclose. Appropriate disciplinary and/or correction action will be taken as warranted.

Governing documents etc available to public Part VI line 19

MISSION STATEMENT: To inspire hope, reduce stigma and empower women in or seeking recovery for behavioral health issues and other life challenges to increase their recovery capital, heal themselves, and help other women to do the same. FOUNDATION OVERVIEW: SHE RECOVERS Foundation is a global grassroots movement currently consisting of more than 325,000 women in or seeking recovery from substance use disorders, other behavioral health issues and/or life challenges. This lifeline organization connects women through its virtual platforms and in-person community networks, provides resources and supports women to develop their own holistic recovery patchworks, and empowers them to thrive and share their successes. All efforts are designed to end the stigma and shame of being in recovery so that more women can heal and grow. A focus on research enables the organization to establish a more robust evidence base related to the efficacy of non-traditional recovery pathways.GOALS AND OBJECIVES: (1) Provide women from diverse backgrounds increased access to communities of recovery support both online and in person.(2) Help women build recovery capital by introducing or providing recovery resources necessary to cultivate individualized and holistic recovery practices.(3) Reduce the stigma related to women and recovery through public awareness programs and education of key policymakers, stakeholders and the general public.(4) Contribute to a growing evidence base that shows the efficacy of non-traditional recovery practices.(5) Be a trusted source of information for all women in or seeking recovery.Strategies. The Foundations stated purpose is to connect, support and empower women in or seeking recovery.CONNECT: Building a Volunteer Network of Support. The stigma associated with asking for help to recover - not just from substance use disorders - but from other mental health issues like anxiety or depression or other life challenges caused by trauma, racism, sexual, emotional or physical abuse is fueling a North American health crises. The Foundation strongly believes that recovery becomes more accessible and acceptable in a community when there is a direct personal connection. The Foundation is committed to building a strong, diverse and active volunteer network of online and local community peer-based and peer-led recovery support groups and programs. It is currently developing a training and mobilization plan that includes tiered volunteer programs.SUPPORT: Expanding In-Person Events to Increase Womens Recovery Capital. A survey of the SHE RECOVERS online community conducted by the University of Pennsylvania in late 2018 found 45% of respondents identified in-person pro-social events as the service that they most highly desired to support theor ongoing recovery. For more than eight years, women have been invited to strengthen their recovery capital by fostering relationships, engaging in introspection, sharing their experiences with one another, and learning how to practica radical self-care. The Foundation is deeply committed to increasing event access for women locally as well as nationally by considering locations, cost, topics, and programming designed to meet the needs of diverse communities.Creating Resource-Rich Online Platforms. Emerging evidence reveals women are reaching out in greater numbers - particularly online - to connect with and receive support for various behavioral health issues. Women build recovery capital in online groups. They allow flexibility around when they access support and provide the ability to share information and feelings without having to disclose their personal identity. Most importantly, online support is financially accessible as forums and Facebook groups do not charge their members to participate; and as long as women can access internet, there are no geographical boundaries.Building Capacity to Support Women in Recovery. Dedicated to increasing access to its programs, the Foundation offers certif

IRS990/Desc0Given the global pandemic, the Foundation pivoted and focused a majority of its effort on creating and strengthening free accessible online resources and educational programs for women in or seeking recovery globally. New online programs served more than 325,000 women including: 448 daily Online Gatherings (approx 60 women at each); 29 weekly online topic-specific meetings addressing mental health (attracing 50 women live and archived for evergreen viewing), with foundations social support platforms doubling in size recognizing more than 235,000 followers in the public Facebook group; more than 7,650 women engaged in Facebook private platform; 5,600 followers on Instagram; and more than 200,000 Podcast downloads. We also trained and managed more than 90 volunteers to facilitate online programs. While all in-real-life events were postponed (annual conference and retreats), the organization maintained a 400-person waitlist for all sold-out program events. See Sch O.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The Foundations President, Dawn Nickel, and the Secretary, Taryn Strong, have a family relationship.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1The organizations Vice President and Executive Director/CEO thoroughly reviewed the Form 990 and discussed it with the preparer CPA.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2All Foundation officers, directors, board committee members and employees are covered under the Conflict of Interest Policy.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5PART III, 4a, PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS-CONTINUED. The Foundation strengthened the behavioral health workforce by training and certifying 40 women in the Trama Informed Yoga Teacher Designation program and supported more than 160 women designated recovery coaches certified by the Foundation. The Foundation also worked to build processes and procedures for volunteer recruitment and onboarding; began designing the organizations grassroots chapter network; developed collaborations and strategic relationships with leading recovery organizations; developed internal procedures and process to increase efficiency and reduce expenses to provide increased mission funding; and developed fundraising platforms and campaigns for individual and corporate donors to support mission programs.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt6MISSION STATEMENT: To inspire hope, reduce stigma and empower women in or seeking recovery for behavioral health issues and other life challenges to increase their recovery capital, heal themselves, and help other women to do the same.
