“In 2020, necs' performing and visual arts program impacted the lives of 62 children through seven programs - three children's theater collaborative (ctc) programs, three virtual spring workshops (hip hop, monologue, songwriting), and our dance as activism summer intensive - as well as hundreds of community members who attended in-person or virtual culminating performances. At the onset of the shutdowns due to the pandemic, necs swiftly transitioned our programming to the virtual platform. In response to the impact of job loss and insecurity on our already under-resourced community, we offered our virtual spring workshops at no cost to participants. Thanks to an arts alive project grant from artswestchester, our dance as activism summer intensive enabled youths to tell their stories based on lived experience and express their vision of a solution and change through dance. This program also was provided at no cost to participants. In february, our 2019-2020 ctc program staged a production of pegasus, an original musical written for necs by remi award winner steven hayet and helen hayes award winner britt bonney. Our 2020-2021 ctc participants began creating melanin magic: a celebration of black excellence and artistry. Our fall virtual ctc program offered yet another opportunity for youths to devise and perform an original piece of art. Necs' performing and visual arts program provided paid work for six teaching artists impacted by the shutdowns and 16,350 in tuition subsidies, discounts, and scholarships for participants.”
“In 2020, necs' leadership and empowerment program impacted the lives of 43+ children and young adults through six programs - healthy relationships workshops, empowered girls & young women, empowered boys & young men, and stories & crafts at dunbar heights. Necs partnered with nationally- recognized organizations, relation-shift and a call to men, to provide empowerment programs for young women and men focused on healthy relationships and healthy manhood. We partnered with the peekskill city school district to offer our empowered programs for boys and young men in accord with the my brother's keeper initiative. At the onset of the pandemic, we transitioned to the virtual platform to enable this programming to continue. Through a partnership with the rotary club of peekskill and residents of a peekskill housing authority development, necs offered our summer, outdoor, in-person, socially-distanced stories & crafts at dunbar heights program to share culturally-relevant stories and associated crafts with young children of color. A grant from the rotary club of peekskill provided the children with their own copies of each book read. All of these programs were provided at no cost to participants. Necs' leadership and empowerment program provided paid work for five teaching artists and instructors during a time of job loss and insecurity, and 8,055 in tuition subsidies, discounts, and scholarships for program participants.”
“In 2020, necs' steam program impacted the lives of 13 children through our nature connection summer and fall programs. Our summer program provided a safe, educational environment for parents to send their children during the school break. Our fall program subsequently was offered due to popular demand. Necs' nature connection program was developed to enable children to explore the natural world around them, connect them with how their food is grown and produced, and help them to understand their connection to the earth and its inhabitants. Nature connection also addresses the sentiment of many of our local children of color who feel unwelcome in our community parks and other natural areas. Necs partnered with local businesses and organizations, including the peekskill city school district, hudson valley h2o, and longhaul farm, to provide experiences on the hudson river, hiking, yoga, farming, arts & crafts, and leadership and community building activities. Necs also partnered with the ecological citizen's project to create the peekskill regeneration farm, a repurposing of city property to provide sustenance and work opportunities for residents. Necs' steam program provided paid work for multiple instructors and staff, and 3,950 in tuition subsidies, discounts, and scholarships for program participants.”
“In 2020, necs' community building program predominantly focused on supporting members of the community through the stress, emotion, and uncertainty exacerbated by a global pandemic and civil unrest triggered by the murder of george floyd. At the onset of the shutdowns, necs conducted a series of weekly, virtual parent workshops to support parents in navigating work and schooling at home, discussing difficult and painful current events with their children, and processing their fears regarding health, job loss, and food insecurity. In response to civil unrest, necs provided space and guidance for local youths to channel their pain, anger, and frustration into effective social action. These programs were provided at no cost to participants. In addition to the teaching artists and instructors included in 4a-4c on part iii, necs' programs provided paid work for five facilitators, support staff, and interns whose efforts supported multiple programs.”
