We identify locations around the world that are most vulnerable to broader social impacts of climate change such as migration, instability, and conflict. From there, we conduct research to understand why these vulnerabilities exist--such as expected climate impacts combined with lack of infrastructure, extractive policies, underinvestment in communities, and other factors. Then we engage with community organizations and policymakers to effect structural changes that support and protect those communities.

| Our largest program area is our work in the state of Ceará, Brazil. We are working together with a coalition of organizations to support the state environmental secretariat in developing Ceará's climate action and sustainability plan. Specifically, we are identifying the areas most vulnerable to climate induced land degradation and desertification, and the impact of these changes on biodiversity and social well-being (measured via the UN SDG indicators) in order to inform state planning. Through our collaboration with these partners, we are also beginning to support the development of the state's first greenhouse gas emissions inventory and net-zero climate action plan. | $0 | $50,000 |
| Early this year, we worked together with local organizations in our home city to identify the disparate impacts that the COVID-19 pandemic would have on poverty and food access. Using the outcomes of this research, we supported local policy development enabling equitable long-term access to healthy food sources during the pandemic and beyond. Program and policy areas we supported include municipal support for community gardens with associated food distribution at public service centers in low-income areas, and expanded support for SNAP-eligible COVID-safe food delivery programs. | $0 | $26,000 |
| Alongside our direct impact work, we continue to conduct research in support of future program development. This year, these areas of research included a) performing a systems analysis examining root causes of the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar and its associated refugee crisis together with high impact levers for supporting an end to the crisis, b) expected social impacts of the locust outbreak in the horn of Africa, including food security and migration, and c) an assessment of areas most vulnerable to sociopolitical instability, conflict, and forced displacement as a result of water scarcity. These areas of research have so far resulted in the creation of a second major program area for 2021: Supporting community organizations and associated policy development in the Lake Chad Basin region, where communities are already suffering greatly from the impacts of climate change induced water scarcity. We expect additional program develop to follow as funding permits. | $0 | $10,000 |
