“Yes, the organization has members.”
“Yes, members have the right to appoint one or more members of the governing body (the board of directors).”
“General governance decisions are made by the governing body, the board of directors. However, the organization's bylaws hold that members have certain additional rights including the right to approve directors and officers, adjust the number of directors on the board, and the right to remove directors; and members have the exclusive right to dissolve the organization, approve amendment of the bylaws, and make changes to the articles of incorporation.”
“The 990 form and schedules are compiled by an independent CPA, and reviewed by all board members to ensure information is accurate.”
“Lever Foundation has a thorough written conflict of interest policy that directors and employees sign yearly. All persons having a conflict or potential conflict are required to disclose such to the rest of the Board for their review and consideration. Compliance is enforced by the Board, which reviews all potential conflicts of interest, and persons with a conflict of interest abstain from discussions relating to transactions or arrangements that involve or may involve actual or potential conflicts of interest. The potential existence of conflicts is considered when each Board discussion and vote is held, and also reviewed once yearly when the annual conflict of interest policy is re-signed.”
“Yes, the process for determining compensation was reviewed and approved by independent members of the Board and was contemporaneously substantiated in the meeting minutes of the board. Deliberation on an acceptable compensation amount included comparability considerations. Lines 15, 15a, and 15b are relevant only for the $8,000 compensation of director Nick Cooney, as there is no other compensated CEO, Executive Director, top official, or key employee.”
“Lever Foundation's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are available to the public upon request to Lever Foundation at PO Box 715, Lancaster PA, 17603, or by phone at(717) 584-1805.”
“As Lever Foundation's mission is to prevent animal suffering and cruelty to animals by promoting healthy, humane and sustainable food choices around the world, Lever Foundation utilizes local contractor labor in the region for the provision of program services. Lever Foundation also utilizes contract labor outside the United States for various services such as translation, voice recording work, graphic design and IT.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Lever Foundation worked with major food companies to inspire and help them remove the worst forms of animal cruelty from their supply chain, with a particular focus on helping companies commit to ending the use of battery cages (or other cage confinement of egg-laying hens) in their supply chain. In 2020, Lever Foundation was able to secure commitments from several major food companies to end the use of cages in their egg supply chain, policy shifts which will spare millions of animals per year from the acute cruelty of battery cage confinement. Because one out of every four laying hens alive today is living in China, and because there has been very little work done to advance this issue in the region, Lever Foundation focused its efforts on achieving these policy changes in the greater China region and throughout Asia generally. Note: expenses are a rounded approximation, as many program expenses span more than one program area. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | Lever Foundation worked to grow the "alternative protein" space (plant-based meat, egg and dairy products, and "clean" meat, egg and dairy products that are produced from cellular agriculture or fermentation without the need for live animals) by assisting entrepreneurs with starting companies in the space, helping startups secure investment funding, and directing more investor interest and investment dollars to the alternative protein space. Lever Foundation also worked with major food companies to promote adding more alternative protein options. Because one out of every two farm animals alive today is living in China, and because this market is very under-developed in China, Lever Foundation focused its efforts on growing the alternative protein space in the greater China region. Because of the nature of this work, it is hard to estimate a specific number of animals that will benefit from work done in this area by Lever Foundation in 2020. Note: expenses are a rounded approximation, as many program expenses span more than one program area. |

In 2020, grants were provided to entities in Canada, Mexico, Germany, the United Kingdom, Netherlands and Ireland that were: promoting the alternative protein sector; promoting plant-based foods and plant-based eating; promoting compassion for farm animals; and directly caring for rescued animals. Each of these entities' mission and programs share the charitable mission of Lever Foundation of preventing cruelty to animals and promoting humane and sustainable food choices.
