Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The specific purpose of our Foundation is to work with and support San Quentin and the inmates who reside there by ensuring the success and continuation of programs that aim to reduce recidivism and promote successful reintegration. We provide an umbrella of labor and support, reaching Through the Bars with assistance from outside for both staff and inmates who participate in these programs.

2021 brought Through the Bars Foundation back into San Quentin Media Lab after Covid shut downs relaxed. Through the bars is one of the sponsors of the programs inside San Quentin. Some examples of Media that transpired in 2021 were; The San Quentin News, San Quentin Television(SQTV),and various radio shows and podcasts. With the San Quentin News, we were able to release 10 monthly issues in 2021. San Quentin Television(SQTV content was distributed to the 32 other prisons in California. 'Uncuffed' is a radio show made by people behind bars in two California prisons - San Quentin and Salano. San Quentin Podcast "Ear Hustle" was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Forward This" teaches incarcerated men to work in film from pre-production to post production.--
