DescriptionGrantsExpenses
White Mountain Trails Program In 2024, over 45,000 people hiked the Old Bridle Path between May and October, according to electronic trail counters. The organization led a major trail restoration effort focused on sustainable stonework and erosion control. Over the course of the season, the crew installed 167 stone steps and 87 feet of stone cribbing, significantly improving safety and durability along steep and degraded sections of trail. Approximately 940 feet of tread was benched and finished to improve hiker experience and trail resilience. Work was carried out in collaboration with state agencies, volunteers, and professional trail crews.-$165,873
White Mountain Summit Stewards: WTN Americas manages the Franconia Ridge Summit Steward program to protect the fragile alpine zone along one of the most heavily traveled sections of the Appalachian Trail. From late May to early October, more than 45,000 people cross the 1.8-mile alpine stretch of Franconia Ridge. In partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC), and the Waterman Fund, WTN Americas hires and trains seasonal summit stewards, including college interns. Stewards practice integrated trail managementcombining education, restoration, maintenance, and researchto help preserve the rare northeast alpine ecosystem. Their work complements the AMCs volunteer alpine educators and trail adopters.-$27,143
White Mountain Environmental Field School WTN Americas ran a 5-week, 4-credit academic field course that focused on the environmental history of northeastern trails, recreation ecology, wilderness ethics, and alpine trail management. 4 Students earned certifications in Wilderness First Aid and Leave No Trace and participated in a seminar series featuring international speakers via Zoom. Separately, WTN Americas selected 4 International Trails Fellowsgraduate students and professionals who traveled to trail sites across the Americas to conduct research and participate in fieldwork. Fellows did not receive academic credit, but they worked alongside trail practitioners and contributed to shared learning across the region. WTN Americas covered all travel, lodging, and food expenses for fellows.-$13,001

While no formal restricted fund exists, the Board of Directors designated a portion of the 2023 surplusoriginating from a donation by Mike Stonebrakerfor continued work on the White Mountains Trails Program in Franconia Notch State Park, NH, specifically the Old Bridle Path restoration. This strategic use of reserves accounted for the 2024 deficit.
