| The program, designed for 100 students at a local elementary school, aimed to provide them with resources that would emphasize the importance of local growth and the development of a community-based food system. It focused on urban farming, both indoor and outdoor, educating the students about nutritious food consumption. Additionally, the program sought to expose these young minds to various careers and opportunities within the agriculture industry. A significant emphasis of this project was on Black/African American youth, addressing specific challenges they faced. Firstly, many of these students had little to no exposure to the agriculture industry, primarily due to their geographical location. This lack of exposure often left them unaware of the potential and opportunities within this field. Secondly, the program recognized and addressed the negative perceptions of farming that had been ingrained in these youths due to systemic racism, historical exclusion, lack of resources, and other societal factors. Lastly, the program acknowledged that these students had limited to no knowledge about starting and operating a farming business. The program was thus structured to provide them with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to embark on such ventures, should they choose to in the future. The overarching goal was to instill a sense of possibility and empowerment in these students, helping them see agriculture and farming not just as historical or economic activities, but as viable, modern career paths and important elements of community and personal wellness. | $139,345 | $139,345 |
| Black Empowerment Through Agriculture-Agricademy Inc. will continue to demonstrate how small scale farming and other agribusiness creations can be used to boost the economy, create jobs/career opportunities, address diet related health issues and most importantly provide to the declining food supply chain in the black communities that are in food deserts. This will be achieved by offering the "Black Empowerment Through Agriculture Program. Why are black communities in the Cincinnati Tri-state area not pursuing careers in agriculture? The following are some of the factors that have contributed to the small numbers: 1. Little to no exposure to the agriculture industry because of geographical location. 2. A negative perception of farming due to systemic racism along with exclusion; the lack of resources; and 3. limited to no knowledge on how to start a farming/agribusiness operation. Our program has been addressing these issues since 2016 and we would like to continue these efforts in improving the lives of black communities in the Greater Cincinnati Tri-state area by receiving funding from the UWGC Black Empowerment Works Grant. Our program has had much success despite having to deal with COVID-19 and supply chain issues. Since 2020 we have enrolled 300 students in our online program, 40 individuals graduated and 20 started agribusiness operations. | $25,000 | $25,000 |
