“The form 990 was prepared by outside accountants and reviewed by the audit committee. A complete copy of the return was then provided to the board prior to filing.”
“The board of directors annually reviews conflict of interest issues and signs individual conflict of interest forms. If the board of directors or committee has reasonable cause to believe a covered person has failed to disclose a financial interest, it informs the covered person of the basis for such belief and affords the covered person an opportunity to explain the failure to disclose. If, after hearing the response of the covered person and, after making further investigations as it concludes is warranted by the circumstances, the board of directors or committee determines the covered person has failed to disclose a financial interest, it takes appropriate steps to protect the corporation, including, but not limited to, repayment of appropriate funds to the corporation by the covered person.”
“An independent compensation firm was hired to review and research comparative organizations c-level compensation packages. The research was presented to the executive committee. The compensation review process was discussed and documented. The last review took place in february 2019. The ceo reviews the compensation process for other officers.”
“The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements available to the public upon request.”
“Biodiversity and nearly half of its remaining intact ecosystems. They maintain the cultural heritage of humanity, communicating in 95% of the world's languages. Indigenous peoples' intricate knowledge of their homelands holds an unparalleled guide for all of humanity. Increased co2 emissions and the aggressive exploitation of lands, waters, and oceans threaten all of us. Indigenous peoples' wisdom and leadership can guide humanity's efforts to coexist with the natural world. When indigenous peoples thrive, the places critical for humanity thrive as well. We understand guardianship as indigenous peoples' right, capacity, and acceptance of responsibility to sustain vital natural systems within their collective territories. This mission supports our vision of an earth where indigenous peoples defend and uphold the world's thriving forests, oceans and grasslands; where their wisdom maintains vast geographies that underpin the well-being of all humanity; and where recognition and support for indigenous identity equals that of nation states and others in power.”
“40,000 plant species, 2.5 million insects, 2,200 fish and 427 mammals. One in five bird species live in the amazon. No other region on earth sustains a greater overlap among thriving tropical forest and freshwater ecosystems and the territories of indigenous peoples. In amazonia the prospect of securing territorial guardianship at scale is becoming real. This region provides both global opportunity and global leadership, as in many countries indigenous rights are recognized. Yet in some places, rights are not recognized or are threatened by mounting geopolitical forces that continue to marginalize and subvert self-determination of indigenous peoples. To advance, we have developed a suite of strategic, place-anchored partnerships that span three major subregions in northern amazonia, parts of western brazil as well as peru and ecuador. Collectively, these partnerships include at least 48 indigenous identities and at least 16 uncontacted groups upholding 40 million hectares of thriving tropical forest and river systems. The pacific islands - also called 'pasifika' - region covers an ocean expanse that includes some of the world's most diverse coral reef systems with over 600 species of coral reef and some 2,000 species of coral fish. 60% of the word's tuna and a significant portion of the remaining pelagic fishery underpin the value of the offshore fishery for most pacific island countries. Due to the isolation, the pacific islands have a disproportionate share of endemic species on land that have evolved over the years in its mountains and high areas, forests, freshwater and coastal zones. The unique combination of large ocean expanse and islands cover an area larger than the continent of africa and is under the management of 11 million indigenous people who speak some 1,200 languages. Across pasifika, sky islands are high elevation archipelagos of cloud forests, wetlands and basins that rise above the lowlands on mountainous islands. Sky islands hold irreplaceable spiritual, cultural and livelihood values for indigenous pasifika peoples, including sacred mythologies, highly unique ecosystems and vital sources of freshwater. Through the sky islands pledge, the government of the solomon islands has committed to protecting all land above 400 meters elevation, over 20% of the nation's land area. Nia tero is working with solomon islanders to honor this pledge by following the self-determined vision of the indigenous communities that have inhabited these landscapes for millennia. Through developing partnerships with nia tero, customary landholders in vanuatu, new caledonia (kanaky), and papua new guinea are proliferating a sky islands network across southwestern pasifika. The boreal forest, at a scale of over 30 million hectares and as the largest intact forest landscape on earth with huge carbon stores and some of the largest remaining bird and ungulate (caribou) migrations on earth, has an ecological benefit is exceptionally high. In 2019 nia tero began assessing opportunities with indigenous leaders in the region interested in setting up three indigenous protected areas and keepers of the lands programs. Nia tero has provided support to the indigenous leadership initiative, as the organization that has successfully increased the acknowledgment and government support to guardian programs. In addition, they have been key actors in the recognition of the united nations declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples as part of the legislation of british columbia.”

TO SECURE AND AMPLIFY OUR PARTNERSHIPS, NIA TERO IS INVESTING IN KEY ACTIONS THAT SUPPORT POLICY ESSENTIAL TO THE SECURITY OF INDIGENOUS GUARDIANSHIP, CULTURAL CONTINUITY AND SPIRITUALITY AMONG OUR PARTNERS, ECOSYSTEM AND SOCIAL MONITORING SYSTEMS, AND MECHANISMS TO SECURE DURABLE SUPPORT FOR INDIGENOUS GUARDIANSHIP. OUR EFFORT HAS BEEN TO TRAIN INDIGENOUS NEGOTIATORS, TO GIVE THEM THE RESOURCES TO ATTEND KEY POLICY FORA AND TO CO-DESIGN WITH THESE INDIGENOUS PARTNERS, THE VISUALIZATION TOOLS NEEDED TO CONVINCE THE POLICY FRAMEWORKS TO ACKNOWLEDGE, ENGAGE, AND SUPPORT INDIGENOUS PARTNERS IN ADDRESSING BIODIVERSITY AND CLIMATE SOLUTIONS. ADDITIONALLY, NIA TERO SUPPORTS EFFORTS TO REDUCE AND END THE CRIMINALIZATION OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN OUR THREE PRIORITY REGIONS. WE ARE ALSO INVESTING IN STORYTELLING TO AMPLIFY THE IMPORTANCE OF EQUITABLE PARTNERSHIP WITH INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AS A WAY OF ADDRESSING SOME OF THE GREAT SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL/CULTURAL CHALLENGES OF OUR TIME. IN 2019 WE ADVANCED THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR STORYTELLING STRATEGY AND IDENTIFIED THREE PRIORITIES: 1. SUPPORTING INDIGENOUS STORYTELLERS 2. INVESTING IN PARTNERSHIPS THAT ELEVATE VISIBILITY OF INDIGENOUS STORIES AND STORYTELLERS IN OUR PLACE-BASED REGIONS AND GLOBALLY 3. INVESTING IN PLATFORMS TO ACCELERATE AND EASE ACCESS TO PRODUCTION FACILITIES FOR INDIGENOUS STORYTELLERSNIA TERO CONVENINGS AND STORYTELLING WORK CULMINATED IN THE FIRST SKY ISLANDS NETWORK GATHERING IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS, WHERE THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT RECENTLY REINFORCED THE SKY ISLANDS PLEDGE BANNING ALL LOGGING AND MINING ACROSS 20% OF THE COUNTRY'S LAND AREA ABOVE 400 METERS. THROUGH FILM AND SOCIAL MEDIA, OUR STORYTELLING WORK HAS RESULTED IN A GROWING COALITION OF CUSTOMARY LANDHOLDERS FORMALLY JOINING THE PLEDGE. LANDHOLDERS FROM THE LARGEST SKY ISLAND AREAS IN VANUATU AND KANAKY (A.K.A. NEW CALEDONIA), THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT OF MALAITA (IN THE SOLOMONS), AND KEY GROUPS FROM PAPUA NEW GUINEA HAVE ALL MADE COMMITMENTS TO GUARDIANSHIP AT SCALE. |

THIS WILL REQUIRE DEVELOPING SYSTEMS THAT COMBINES TRADITIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL METRICS WITH BIOCULTURAL METRICS TO BE DEFINED AND MEASURED BY OUR INDIGENOUS PARTNERS. ADDITIONALLY, NIA TERO RECOGNIZES THE ESSENTIAL NEED TO PROLIFERATE LEARNING FROM INDIGENOUS GUARDIANSHIP OF VITAL ECOSYSTEMS AROUND THE GLOBE. WE SUPPORT RESEARCH TO FURTHER UNDERSTAND GLOBAL CONTRIBUTIONS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND IMPROVE BIO-CULTURAL APPROACHES TO MEASURING PROGRESS AGAINST LOCALLY- DEFINED GOALS FOR ALL OUR PARTNERSHIPS.
