Mission and Program Overview

Mission

What's Next Washington (WNW) is an organization of formerly incarcerated individuals and allies working to help people with conviction histories reintegrate into society. We pursue three key strategies. We collaborate directly with employers to open pathways to employment for individuals with conviction histories. We held our first two convenings in 2018. We made presentations to one SHRM chapter. We use communications to reduce the stigma faced by the formerly incarcerated. We prototyped The Stigma We Carry in 2018, a panel discussion. We held two of these events in 2018. We provide leadership training to individuals with conviction histories so that they can lead systems change. We submitted grants for funding of these activities, but did not hold any training programs in 2018.

Convenings WNW works to disrupt a lifetime cycle of unemployment by collaborating directly with employers to explore and reduce restrictions on hiring Formerly-Incarcerated Talent (FIT). The first step in this process is the employer convening. WNW held two convenings in 2018 and reached approximately 100 employers. A description of the convening is below: WNW invites HR professionals to attend its convenings. The goals for the events are to: Create a safe space for participants to review and explore their concerns; Examine data regarding the actual risks of hiring people with conviction histories; Discuss hiring policies and the potential for changing them Hear from employers who do hire individuals with conviction histories Consider specific strategies for implementing new hiring practices WNW also welcomes ideas and issues the participants raise during the event itself. WNW provides services to employers post-convening.$0$35,000
The Stigma We Carry - A Conversation with the Formerly Incarcerated, Drug Addicts, and Society's Castaways - Curated by What's Next Washington. We held two of these events in 2018 and reached nearly 100 people. Eleven people became volunteers after attending this panel. Description below: We include both panelist and audience, and explore how bias and stigma impact employment, housing, health, and social service delivery. The people on our panel come from different backgrounds. This juxtaposes for the audience how disparate the outcomes are for panelists with resources, support, and access to medical care than for those without. The panel addresses the impact of staying quiet when life gets hard. Silence maintains the status-quo and the fiction that people don't overcome their struggles. The reactions to the event are overwhelmingly positive. As a result of our first panel, some audience members were moved to "come out of the closet" themselves.$0$10,000
What's Next Podcast Sue Mason, interviews people, most of whom have been formerly incarcerated, in the criminal justice reform movement. They discuss their advocacy efforts, their organizations, and their strategies to end mass incarceration.$0$5,000
Presentations to employer groups around the state; designing The Get FIT Guide - a tool for HR professionals to help them recruit, hire, and retain individuals with conviction histories. Active collaboration with other nonprofits working on re-entry.$0$5,000
