Activity 2

Family advocates' home visiting program is addressing child abuse at its root cause. Volunteers build trusting relationships with struggling families in our community identified as having multiple risk factors for child abuse. Volunteers and paid staff give parents critical tools, coaching and confidence that reduces stress and increases safety. Paid and volunteer parent educators visit the family at home regularly. Parents learn how to activate their child's brain development and strengthen the parent-child bond, as well as effective, non-physical discipline techniques. The information and support we provide, and the skills we teach, reduce the toxic levels of stress on families and work to increase their resiliency and coping skills. When parents understand more about their child's development, become connected to networks and services and learn essential parenting skills, the risk for child abuse is reduced substantially. 44 volunteers who donated 3,055 hours served 57 parents and 102 youth under this program in fiscal year 2012.
